Chapter 152: The Hunter Became the Hunted
Night had already settled over King’s Landing.
Aside from a few Brothels still roaring with drunken laughter until dawn, the entire city had fallen quiet beneath curfew.
Outside the walls, however, the grounds prepared for the coming Tournament still blazed with torchlight and noise.
Merchants rushed to prepare goods for the crowds expected over the next several days. Townsfolk wandered among them, along with the usual cutpurses and thieves who followed any gathering large enough to make coin from.
From a high window of the Hand’s Tower, Lannor looked down upon the restless glow below.
He had already removed his Superior Ursine Armor and both Longswords.
All that remained was a tight black leather outfit and the Hunting Knife at his waist.
Against wandering street thugs, that was already enough for Lannor to handle ten men alone.
And against fully armed Gold Cloaks?
Lannor sincerely doubted those patrolmen, marching predictable routes through the city, would ever notice him at all.
“How are your preparations?”
Eddard Stark approached carrying a candle lantern, lowering his voice as he stopped beside him.
The Witcher tilted his head slightly aside so the faint glow in his cat eyes would not startle the man in the dark.
“The map you provided is excellent. Worthy of the Small Council’s city defense archives.”
Military maps and civilian maps were worlds apart in precision.
According to the Hand of the King, this particular map was not only more accurate, it was updated every month to account for the constant small changes throughout King’s Landing, new shops, altered landmarks, blocked alleys, collapsed structures.
“Sir, Mister Eddard is not worried whether you memorized the route. He’s worried you won’t recognize how different the city appears between day and night.”
Mentos spoke calmly inside his mind.
Night transformed familiar scenery completely. Some people could move into a new home and still fail to find their own door after sunset.
Lannor’s reply remained equally calm.
“So ... should I be worried about that?”
Mentos did not answer directly.
Instead, a three-dimensional model of King’s Landing unfolded along the edge of his vision.
A red point marked his current position.
“Following your Deep Memory Dive last night, I also recorded the city’s terrain map.”
Lannor’s mouth twitched.
That explained why his skull had felt more swollen than usual when he woke.
“ ... Well done. Next time, warn me first.”
After finishing the exchange with the Biological Intelligence Core, Lannor nodded once toward the Hand of the King and headed down through the lower levels of the tower.
The Red Keep maintained extremely dense Sentry patrols. The King, the Hand, and countless nobles lived here after all.
But the spacious layout worked in Lannor’s favor.
He did not even need to crouch or hold his breath.
Using his Supernatural Senses, he simply tracked patrol movements ahead of time, then stepped quietly behind a tree or column whenever needed.
That alone was enough.
When he finally reached the Red Keep gate, his left hand formed a Handprint.
Axii Double Cast.
Two pale clouds of Magical Aura drifted silently toward the guards.
As the Gene Seed continued shaping his body, Lannor estimated he now possessed enough mana for three consecutive Castings.
One Sentry suddenly became fascinated with crushing ants beneath his boots, staring downward without pause.
The other leaned against the wall beside his Loaded Spear and promptly fell asleep.
Large castle gates almost always contained a smaller inset door for individual passage.
Lannor removed the key from one guard’s belt, unlocked the smaller gate, then slipped the key carefully back into place before leaving through the opening.
