Chapter 147: The Last Fire Before Winter

This forge was larger than any other shop on Iron Street.

Built from timber and pale lime-plaster, the structure rose high enough to overlook the entire street below. Twin doors crafted from ebony and weirwood stood open at the entrance, carved with a hunting scene. On either side of the doorway stood stone Knights clad in red armor, posed like guardians, one bearing the likeness of a Griffin, the other a Unicorn.

At the shout from inside the forge, a figure near the furnace finally set down his hammer and walked toward the counter.

So this was “Gendry.”

Nothing unusual about it. In any proper forge, apprentices greeted customers while the master smith reserved himself for true commissions and difficult work.

By now Lannor and Arya had already stepped through the doors and reached the counter.

The little girl was completely dazzled by the displayed samples, staring at everything with bright hungry eyes.

Meanwhile Lannor’s cat eyes swept across Gendry himself.

The boy was broad and powerfully built, solid enough to rival fully grown men who trained year-round, yet his face still carried the rough youthfulness of someone barely in his teens. Black hair. Black eyes.

That kind of physique did not come from training alone. Talent and hard labor had clearly grown together in him.

Lannor smiled amiably.

“Fine work on the helm. But if you plan on opening your own shop someday, you’d better keep learning from your master, especially how to read people. You see us walking in and he already sends you over to greet customers.”

The sturdy boy forced a somewhat stiff smile.

“I want to be a Warrior someday. Not a smith.”

Lannor could tell he was poor at talking to strangers, though he still tried to respond properly whenever someone approached him with kindness.

And almost immediately afterward, as if trying to drown his own awkwardness beneath memorized routine, Gendry launched into a fluent string of sales patter.

“My lord, this is the forge of Tobho Mott. The master is the finest smith in all King’s Landing. He’s the only craftsman in the city capable of working dyes into metal itself instead of merely painting the surface. And he once traveled to the Free City of Qohor to study forging techniques from the masters there. He even learned the forging spells and methods used to work Valyrian Steel.”

“The weapons and armor here are unmatched anywhere in the city. A Golden Dragon spent in this forge is worth more than anywhere else.”

The owner of this forge clearly possessed immense confidence in his own craft.

One impressive title after another rolled off Gendry’s tongue.

Unfortunately for him, the listener standing before the counter was a complete Outlander.

Lannor’s attention locked onto a single phrase.

Valyrian Steel.

Judging from the order of Gendry’s speech, this was obviously the thing Tobho Mott valued most highly, the crown jewel of his reputation.

And the description specifically mentioned “spells and methods.”

If this was not mere exaggeration, then the forging process itself involved magic.

Without revealing anything, Lannor merely gave a relaxed smile, outwardly appearing completely unimpressed by the lengthy sales pitch.

Then he casually began asking about the displayed wares, prices, forging methods, durability, sharpness, and countless other details.

Gendry answered smoothly at first, but under the constant stream of questions his head gradually began spinning.
