Chapter 146: Blood Debts Under Candlelight
Just like back in the Magical World, the two of them wandered through the noisy unfamiliar streets with Lannor leading Arya along.
King’s Landing matched Lannor’s expectations of a proper medieval city almost perfectly.
The moment they stepped beyond the gates of the Red Keep, foul odors and filthy streets rolled over them together.
They asked directions first, then made their way toward the harbor.
Ships from nearly every corner of the known world gathered in the port of King’s Landing.
Vessels from across Westeros docked in the capital, while ships from Essos beyond the Narrow Sea crossed over for intercontinental trade.
If Lannor wanted to find truly unusual animal and plant materials from this world, he first needed access to the broadest possible range of goods.
The harbor district of King’s Landing swarmed with people of every kind.
White-skinned Warriors and Peddlers from Westeros, brown-skinned Merchant Princes from across the sea wearing silk robes and soft silk slippers, and occasionally even Dothraki mercenaries with long braids threaded with little ringing bells.
They brought specialties from distant lands, then hauled goods from King’s Landing back home to profit from the enormous difference in prices.
Lannor pulled Arya through the roaring crowd, weaving from one temporary stall to another.
“Wraithweed from the Shadow Lands! Look here, true Shadowgrass from Asshai!”
“White lion pelts from the Great Grass Sea! One arrow through the heart, flawless hide!”
The cries of merchants rose and fell like waves.
Arya, despite being the local here, stared around with bright eyes, dizzy from excitement.
Meanwhile Lannor, the actual outsider, remained completely unmoved.
As if I wasn’t already an outsider back in the Magical World. I still haggled those swindling merchants into the dirt all the same.
Among the overwhelming sea of goods, Lannor and Mentos quickly established a screening process.
For herbs and plants, he would casually rub the leaves or stems between his fingers like a normal buyer inspecting quality, then slip his fingertips into his mouth to taste them.
From those tiny samples, Mentos could already reconstruct most of the medicinal properties.
As for animal materials like pelts, leather, oversized fangs, or massive bones, Lannor would crouch close as though inspecting craftsmanship while secretly bringing the Roaring Bear Head Necklace nearer to test for any vibration.
According to everything currently known about this world, dragons appeared to be the strongest creatures in existence.
Everything else people encountered seemed painfully ordinary.
Since that was the case, they might as well use the presence of mana as the dividing line and filter out anything worthless immediately.
Once the selection system was established, Lannor’s pace through the market increased dramatically.
He rarely remained at a stall for more than ten seconds.
So far, nothing had truly caught his interest.
Most herbs had near-identical substitutes back in the Magical World, while the animal materials were usually more decorative than practical.
“Maybe the truly valuable goods never reach ordinary markets,” Lannor murmured after making another circuit through the harbor district. “Black markets might be where the real materials end up.”
By now his rapid movement through the market, combined with his striking appearance and the obviously extraordinary hilt of Arondight protruding over his shoulder, had drawn considerable attention.
Lannor could feel hidden eyes following him from across the stalls.
Several times merchants who appeared perfectly calm on the surface offered him prices so low they bordered on charity, even volunteering to deliver the goods personally.
They were fishing for his address.
