Chapter 140: A Sword Through Frozen Rain

When Lannor first stepped through the entrance, Robert Baratheon had looked ready to kill someone.

But as the young witcher drew closer, those faintly gleaming cat eyes became impossible to ignore beneath the dim firelight.

“Hmph. Cat eyes? Boy, what sort of cursed sickness did you catch?”

The king still sounded displeased, but the killing intent had faded from his face.

The Targaryens, former rulers of Westeros, carried a bloodline famous for beauty beyond mortal measure, hair like molten silver, and violet eyes. Robert had built his throne atop their corpses and his hatred had not cooled with the years. If he could have wiped every last trace of them from the earth, he would have slept easier.

Lannor answered naturally, as though the conversation had never turned sharp at all.

“A strange sickness indeed, Your Grace. Not a particularly fortunate story either. I doubt anyone present would enjoy hearing it.”

“Quite right.”

The beautiful golden-haired woman standing between king and prince spoke with thinly veiled contempt.

“We are discussing the injuries suffered by the heir to the kingdom and the crimes of the one responsible. The odd affliction of some wandering rustic can wait until people are in the mood for tavern jokes.”

Robert caught the meaning beneath her words immediately. His eyes slid sideways toward the woman with naked disgust.

“This was two children fighting. One used a real sword, the other loosed a wolf. Since when are you calling that a ‘crime’?!”

Lannor could already see the shape of the room.

Joffrey and Arya each had their own story, and both sides were trying to bend the king’s judgment in their favor. But the amusing part was that Robert himself plainly did not care much about his son being bitten by a wolf. Instead, he stood between Eddard Stark and the blond woman doing his best to smooth things over.

The woman was undoubtedly the queen.

Which meant the real conflict here was not between children at all, but between the queen’s family and House Stark.

Lannor clicked his tongue faintly.

“Gods above, Mentos. Political struggle mixed with family disputes. Makes my scalp crawl.”

“Yes, sir. I agree completely. Therefore I will reduce analytical participation in this matter to avoid overload. You should untangle it yourself.”

The Biological Intelligence Core knew its weaknesses well enough. Wisely, it chose not to involve itself.

While Lannor traded complaints with the voice in his head, the conversation inside the tent had already dragged itself back on course.

Robert repeated his stance with growing impatience. Two children had fought, both had crossed the line, therefore neither side would pursue the matter further.

But the queen did not agree. Her face stayed cold as polished ivory.

“She must be punished.”

“And how do you want me to punish her?” Robert barked back. “Whip the girl? Parade her through camp? Seven hells, do you really want everyone hearing that you got disarmed by a little girl?”

The first half was aimed at the queen, the second at his son. Robert was trying to show Joffrey where his true interests lay.

The wars that had overturned the dynasty were barely a generation old. Westeros did not want a weak prince.

Joffrey’s expression visibly wavered. Even he understood that reputation mattered more than bruised pride.

The queen understood it too. Once the king had spoken that far aloud, there was no realistic path left to punish Arya herself.

But with her temperament, letting House Stark walk away untouched was equally impossible.

Robert pushed himself up from the armrests of his chair with obvious effort, preparing to leave the tent for air.
