Chapter 136: The Girl Who Would Not Kneel
Just like the statue of the Lady of the Lake standing within Dark Water village, the lake itself rose to bear her.
Waves gathered beneath the Lady of the Lake in a supernatural embrace, lifting both her and Arya into the air before Lannor. The little girl’s face was glowing with excitement and astonishment. She jumped straight out of the Lady’s arms and ran to Lannor’s side.
“My lord! Did you really defeat the Evil God? That’s incredible! What did it look like? Can I see it?”
Lannor did not answer immediately. Instead, he looked toward the Lady upon the waves.
“Yes, Lannor.” The Lady brushed aside her deep green hair so it would not conceal the flawless lines of her body. “The instant you succeeded, we erased every remnant. As I told you before, allowing such things to remain within this world would have been an outcome no living being wished to witness.”
“And now, I shall redirect the connection of that Conjunction of the Spheres rift toward another world.”
“You can’t simply close it?”
Lannor tilted his head slightly.
“Impossible,” the Lady answered plainly. “This is a fissure formed naturally through Chaos magic itself. Its scale is utterly different from man-made portals. Even if I joined hands with the Gaunter O’Dimm you know, we still could not oppose the greater tide of Chaos magic.”
Lannor nodded. Such matters lay far beyond his current understanding.
Better to leave them to the Lady.
The Lady of the Lake was a conceptual being born from virtue itself. To violate those virtues would be no different from killing herself.
Her pale green fingers lifted gently toward the depths of Vizima Lake. A crack resembling shattered glass slowly rose from beneath the water.
It possessed a strange quality. When the rift turned sideways toward him, Lannor had Mentos measure its thickness.
The readings could not even define a single pixel.
It was “thicknessless” in the conceptual sense.
The Lady never allowed either Lannor or Arya to view the rift head-on.
Lannor understood why.
If Dagong had not already been besieged and weakened in the deeper layers of existence, then its material projection would never have been so fragile. And even in that weakened state, Lannor had no doubt it could have destroyed a city like Vizima outright, perhaps even an entire kingdom.
The thing merely needed to walk outside once, and another city full of lunatics would appear behind it.
And supposedly, there were Overlords above Dagong.
Lannor had absolutely no desire to glimpse the world those beings came from.
After a short wait, the Lady finally turned the rift toward them.
The shattered-glass Conjunction of the Spheres fissure descended slowly into the center of Dagong’s temple under the Lady’s power, settling upright like an opened doorway.
Both Lannor and Arya understood what that meant. According to Berengar’s theory, Arya’s world had already displaced Dagong’s world from the connection within the rift.
Which meant it was finally time for the girl to go home.
Arya looked up at Lannor first, then toward the rift.
There was longing in her eyes, but reluctance too.
“Can’t I stay a few more days? That thing looks pretty stable...”
“The turbulence in Chaos magic is calm right now, which allows ordinary humans to pass safely,” the Lady said lightly. “If we wait longer, who can say what the turbulence will become? Or whether the Conjunction will drift again?”
“Arya Stark, Wolf’s Blood. This is the moment you are meant to return home.”
The little girl puffed out her cheeks.
“ ... Fine.”
She turned to look at Lannor one more time. Only after seeing him nod did she tighten the straps on her little bundle and adjust the tiny “Sewing Needle” at her waist before slowly walking toward the rift.
Lannor felt a trace of melancholy himself, but he still believed that a noble girl in a medieval world without magic would always fare better surrounded by family than wandering through a foreign land.
Judging by Arya’s father’s noble rank, she would probably live a safe and comfortable life...
“Miss Stark ... Arya Stark! Where are you?! ... Bloody wolf brat! ... May all the Starks eat shit!”
