Chapter 135: Moonlight Over Broken Shields

Once Lannor understood how Dagong’s flesh had been constructed, the battle lost nearly all suspense.

Even before that, Dagong had already been terrifying enough. The thing carried the weight and strength of a war elephant built purely for slaughter, and it kept its believers close around it like a pack of blood-crazed orcas.

Dagong’s temple was not large, perhaps the size of two badminton courts laid side by side. Inside that cramped space, the enormous body of the evil god charged wildly from end to end, occasionally launching itself into those supernatural leaps before crashing down with crushing force.

Its believers were no less dangerous. Their claws and fangs could contend with armor and steel, and the swollen muscle packed onto their frames far exceeded anything human. Against ordinary people, they would have been butchers.

More importantly, there were many of them.

Lannor did not regard the Deep Divers as serious threats, but he understood the numbers well enough. In a direct contest of strength, he could perhaps handle three at once. There were more than a dozen in the temple now. Once they closed in, there would be no room left to maneuver.

Any witcher should have found this situation troublesome, perhaps even frightening.

Unfortunately for Dagong, Lannor happened to be rich.

And in many situations, rich was simply another way of saying heavily armed.

The Alchemy Sack at his lower back clinked loudly.

Lannor reached inside and drew out a linked chain of bombs, five bound together.

“Mentos, activate Signs Auxiliary Function. Begin airflow field modeling.”

“Task established ... calculation requires five seconds.”

Lannor clicked his tongue.

“Knew it. Your processing power’s painfully mundane.”

“ ... Then hurry up and learn something advanced enough to upgrade me!”

Ignoring Mentos’ indignant shouting inside his head, Lannor had already prepared to buy time.

From the quintuple bomb chain, the first was Dancing Star.

After detonation, it would release a blinding flash, and conveniently enough, Deep Divers had no eyelids.

Most witchers rarely used such bombs. Cost was one issue, but the greater problem was that strong light cast deep shadows, and shadows ruined a witcher’s ability to judge distance, terrain, and enemy movement.

For Lannor, though...

I’m already fighting enemies through a censoring mosaic. Why would I care about a little shadow?

He plucked the first bomb free, lit it with a snap of his fingers, and tossed it high into the air.

Even his silver sword had gone back into its scabbard. A warm and almost charitable smile spread across his face.

“Watch the fireworks.”

The bomb exploded at the peak of its arc.

The blast itself was modest, but the burst of light that followed hung over the lakeshore like a newborn sun in the middle of the deepening night.

The Deep Divers’ screeching instantly rose another level.

Every creature rushing to surround him fell into blind panic. They staggered aimlessly, disoriented and clawing at empty air.

Dagong’s body remained unaffected, but to Lannor, moving under the effects of his potions, the evil god’s attack patterns and timing had already become painfully obvious.

The frozen ground created earlier by Northern Wind did not hinder him at all. If anything, it made his movement seem even more ghostlike, like a wraith gliding over water.

Five seconds passed.

The familiar airflow model appeared across his retina, projected by Mentos. As Lannor moved and breathed, the model shifted in real time.

Then, from bottom to top, he ignited the remaining four bombs.

Three Dragon’s Dream. One Hive.

He threw them upward in sequence. The first had already burst overhead, spraying thick yellow-green incendiary mist from the fractured casing.

At the same moment, Lannor followed the projected calculations on his retina and released a finely adjusted Aard Sign to one side.

Bang.

His silver-white hair began to drift with the changing current.

The incendiary mist was caught and drawn into the airflow, outlining the shape of the wind itself.

A miniature tornado.
