Chapter 131: Shadows Along the Seawall

Lannor ground out the stubborn flames beneath his boots among the charred remains.

Witcher bombs truly deserved their reputation. Even a basic Dragon’s Dream already felt, to Lannor, comparable to the homemade Molotov cocktails civilians used during the industrial era.

Industrial-grade purification techniques were one of civilization’s great thresholds, yet witcher alchemy could push combustion enhancement this far. That alone was impressive.

And if Dragon’s Dream were combined with his Signs Auxiliary Function-enhanced Aard Sign to construct a specialized airflow field before ignition with Igni...

The battlefield effect would probably become downright monstrous.

As he silently refined future combat methods in his mind, Mentos’ calm synthetic voice echoed inside his skull.

“Sir, please maintain concentration. The next phase will be unpleasant.”

Lannor raised a brow and forced his thoughts back under control.

He began gathering the corpses of the corrupted drowners together, stacking dry grass and firewood beneath their half-burned bodies.

Dragging a single drowner corpse alone posed no issue. Lannor’s expression remained easy enough then.

But as more corrupted corpses piled together, his face gradually tightened.

The exposed muscle tissue revealed beneath the burns inevitably entered the witcher’s sight.

Those tissues had grown in utter chaos.

Even the shallowest understanding of anatomy should have made it obvious, those structures could never properly move a living body.

And yet moments earlier, they had been sprinting across the shore alive.

As the heap of corpses grew, Lannor’s thoughts began instinctively searching for patterns within the twisted flesh.

It was a natural human response when encountering something unfamiliar.

But when that instinct for understanding turned toward matters connected to Dagong, it only dragged the mind deeper into darkness.

As though Dagong’s very existence existed to warn all sentient beings—

Reason and curiosity were merely tiny sandbars rising above a black ocean.

Sometimes, knowing less was mercy.

Even though Lannor consciously restrained his thoughts, and even though his progress compared to several days ago had already been remarkable...

His brow still furrowed tighter and tighter.

Mental Defense Module Status: Available

Query: Initiate defensive protocol?

“No ... I need to build resistance. I’m almost finished.”

After placing the final drowner corpse atop the pyre, Lannor suppressed the nausea rising from deep inside his chest and poured another bottle of Dwarven Spirit over the pile.

Then he snapped his fingers.

Igni.

Only once the raging fire swallowed the bodies completely did the tension slowly leave his mind.

“I still find it hard to believe. These things merely worship Dagong, yet they already carry this level of corruption. So what kind of existence is Dagong itself? Against something capable of mental corruption like this ... do I really have what it takes to fulfill the Lady’s request?”

The flames crackled violently beneath the lake wind while twisted shadows danced around him.

Facing the dark waters, Lannor asked the question softly.

The Lady’s Operational Courier emerged gracefully from beneath the lake surface.

Even her steps resembled a catwalk by nature, hips swaying with effortless allure, though nymphs themselves had likely never spent a day studying human beauty standards.

“The Lady has observed you for a long time. You were only brought here after receiving her recognition. You should have more confidence in yourself.”

The nymph came to stand beside Lannor, watching the corrupted corpses burn.

“And a little more faith in the Lady and her companions’ arrangements.”

“When does the operation against Dagong begin? The mental strain from these corrupted drowners is already close to my limit. I’ve also strengthened my combat ability as much as possible in the shortest available time. Has the Lady’s preparation been completed?”

“That is why I came.”

The nymph brushed aside her deep green hair, exposing the full curve of the breast nearest Lannor.
