Chapter 128: The Night the Docks Burned

Berengar frowned as he watched Lannor tamper with a formula that was already nearing completion.

“The second heating cycle of Maribor Forest is already done. It’s not time for the third heating yet.”

Lannor lifted the crucible onto the fire without the slightest hesitation while explaining calmly.

“I think the formula still has room for improvement. Let me try something.”

The old witcher sighed through knitted brows, feeling that Lannor’s outrageous combat ability had made him underestimate alchemical knowledge.

Witcher alchemy originated from the Witcher Confraternity.

Its founders were the legendary sorcerer Alzur and his teacher, Cosimo Malaspina.

Both men were renowned across the entire human world.

Their mastery of alchemy spoke for itself.

And throughout the long centuries that followed, countless talented witcher alchemists continued refining the craft.

They absorbed the academic progress of each era, improving and supplementing witcher alchemy generation after generation.

Only because of that solid foundation and relentless advancement had witcher alchemy become one of the “little secrets” even sorcerers found intriguing.

And for those arrogant, impossibly learned sorcerers to call something a “little secret” already proved how deep witcher alchemy truly was.

In Berengar’s eyes, Lannor was being a little too full of himself.

Still, he had no intention of stopping him.

Young alchemists always believed their cleverness entitled them to improve mature formulae.

That impulse was inevitable.

Besides, Lannor was not brewing something dangerous like a bomb. The materials might be expensive, but the boy knew kings. He knew wealthy, generous sorceresses too.

Why the hell should I worry about his ingredient costs?

Did I get pig fat poured into my brain?!

Since it was neither dangerous nor financially concerning, Berengar simply folded his arms and watched Lannor work with orderly precision.

Watching youngsters stumble appropriately every now and then was one of an elder’s few pleasures.

But after a while, the expression of amusement on Berengar’s face began slipping apart.

One eyebrow rose while the other sank, his surprise written plainly across his features.

“This brat’s workflow ... is this really improvised?!”

It was too smooth.

Far too smooth.

Anyone who had ever performed chemical experiments understood how even the placement of equipment affected efficiency.

And that was while following an established procedure.

Yet now Lannor was executing a process nobody had ever summarized before, and his movements flowed as though an instruction manual floated before his eyes, one he had already followed dozens of times.

Lannor steadily carried out the steps he had deduced himself.

Between the original second and third heating phases of Maribor Forest, he inserted an additional heating cycle.

During that process, he added a small amount of Water Essence.

This alchemical material was commonly harvested from swamp hags or drowners. It was essentially water of unchanged nature, only far denser.

The remaining steps were unremarkable.

With Mentos assisting him, Lannor moved through the procedure in an unnaturally fluid state, quickly bottling and sealing the unknown version of Maribor Forest before setting it upon the table.

For a moment, the young witcher and the old witcher both stood there with arms crossed, staring at the potion bottle.

The liquid inside looked clear and luminous. A faint pale-blue glow lent it an unmistakably magical atmosphere.

Berengar found himself genuinely confused.

Because no matter how he looked at it, the thing did not resemble a failed batch.

Could this bastard actually have created something?
