Chapter 110: A Wolf Before Kings

Inside Vizima’s royal palace, Triss slowly lowered the hand wrapped in swirling power, her face pale with disbelief.

Keira sat curled in a chair behind her. Gone was the lazy ease she had shown when first meeting Lannor. Now she gnawed at her fingernails, anxiety drawn tight across her face.

The name Prinslav Stessa had frightened her badly.

Logically, there were not many people in all of Temeria capable of displaying the influence they had uncovered during the investigation.

But neither sorceress had dared suspect him because ... if it truly was him, then the matter had already grown into a catastrophe.

People always instinctively avoided the worst possibility.

Which was exactly why, when the worst finally arrived, it struck like a hammer blow.

“What did he say?” Keira asked urgently. “When is he leaving?”

Triss stood inside the casting circle, staring blankly ahead.

“He said he isn’t leaving.”

“Not leaving?!”

Keira shot up from the chair.

“Why? Money? Reputation? What would a witcher even do with those?! Does he not want to live?!”

“Not for money. Not for reputation either. He said ... he’s doing it because it’ll make him happy.”

“Happy? He’s insane! Completely insane!”

Still chewing at her nails, Keira paced beside the chair.

“No. That’s definitely an excuse. He just thinks we haven’t paid enough. He’s a witcher, he spends his whole life chasing coin, how could he not want more?!”

“Damn it! He’s got leverage on us now. We need to pay him enough to keep quiet and leave Vizima. If Stessa learns we truly traced this back to him, forget resigning as royal advisors. One day we’ll just quietly die from poison!”

As she spoke, Keira hurried toward her laboratory, clearly intending to scrape together enough money to buy Lannor’s silence and send him away from the city.

Triss stood motionless, watching her go.

Reason told her Keira’s conclusion made sense. Triss had lived for decades and never once encountered a man like this.

A man who wanted neither wealth nor power, not even the hollow comfort of fame.

A man who intended to kill a count simply because doing so would satisfy him, and because a few peasant children deserved justice.

How could such a person exist?

And yet emotionally, she could not shake the feeling that Lannor had meant every word.

He truly intended to kill a count for the sake of children no one else cared about.

Then what about her?

Power still coiled around Triss’s fingers.

Was she supposed to follow logic as Keira had, sever ties with Lannor, and pretend none of this concerned her?

Inside the royal advisor’s laboratory, Triss found herself caught between two paths.

Meanwhile, within one of the largest estates in Vizima’s entire trade district, the handsome middle-aged Count Prinslav Stessa had finally concluded that his “good dog” from the Skellige Isles had most likely met a bad end the night before.

“Well now, that’s interesting. Morgen, come here.”

Count Stessa sat inside his study handling the day’s affairs.

The first matter laid upon his desk concerned Ubank leaving the previous night with weapons and an authorization slip permitting him to mobilize personnel from a security company, then failing to return.

Stessa had always enjoyed using Ubank.

Because the descendant of Skellige dog-trainers practically treated himself as the count’s hunting hound.

He understood perfectly what kind of dog pleased his master, and so shaped himself accordingly.

Obedient when required.

Savage when necessary.
