Chapter 108: A Name

From the very first day Lannor arrived in this fantastical world, what terrified him most had never been grotesque monsters, swift werewolves, or vampires.

It had been curses.

Spirits.

And ... mental manipulation.

Physical monsters never truly unsettled him.

Back then he could barely overpower a chicken, but in his previous world, who had not seen artillery fire or live ammunition drills on television?

Lannor possessed none of those things himself, yet in those ignorant first days after crossing into this dangerous world, he still instinctively regarded the military power of his homeland as if it somehow belonged to him as well.

It was one of the few things that granted him even fleeting comfort.

And because of that, the non-physical horrors became the things he loathed most.

Back in his old world, death was simply death.

Here, merely looking at the state of wandering spirits made Lannor feel that if he were ever to die, he should at least try not to die with too much resentment in his heart.

The wailing spirits lingering in the human world sounded as though they were being tortured every moment of every day.

And as for the spells capable of twisting and overriding a person’s free will entirely ... Those were enough to make one’s blood run cold.

His previous world had produced no shortage of stories about useless men who gained mind-control powers and proceeded to live outrageously pleasant lives.

But no one wanted to become the victim.

Or the background extra.

So under crushing anxiety, Lannor and Mentos had designed several mental defense contingencies together.

After becoming a witcher and gradually learning the common knowledge surrounding supernatural forces, most of those plans had been discarded.

Looking back now, the abandoned ones had been little more than castles in the air.

The fantasies of amateurs.

Still, a few remained.

Just in case.

Mental Defense Protocol Three existed specifically to counter visual mediums capable of influencing the mind.

At Lannor’s command, scattered blocks of distorted color began appearing across his retinas.

Then, as though locking onto a target area, the color distortion fused into a dense black mosaic that completely obscured the Lady of the Lake’s mutated fingers beneath layers of visual static.

Mentos continuously analyzed the source of the mental interference in real time, adjusting the mosaic’s position and shape according to movement.

The instant the primary source of psychic contamination was hidden, clarity flooded back into Lannor’s mind.

“Sir, your mental resilience and recovery speed far exceed our original estimates!”

Mentos sounded genuinely delighted.

Lannor himself was far less surprised.

“The Gene Seed do not strengthen only the flesh. The moment we opened the capsule, the unnatural phenomena already proved that the origin of those Gene Seed, the human empire, must also possess extraordinary achievements in the realm of the mind.”

Now, from Lannor’s perspective, the Lady of the Lake’s hand was simply a large patch of mosaic.

Then the mosaic peeled away from her fingers and fell onto the corpse lying on the ground.

An instant later, the entire corpse became one enormous censored blur.

And the massive block of distortion bulged and shifted from side to side from time to time.

It no longer resembled a human body.

More like an octopus dragged ashore.

Soft.

Twitching.

A thick stench of seawater seeped into the air without warning. Though the sunlight had not dimmed in the slightest, the entire world suddenly felt filthy, as though coated beneath mildew and greasy dust.

Like peering through grimy frosted glass.

Beside the Lady, the nymph no longer even dared to turn around. She exposed only her beautiful back to the scene.

Judging by the trembling of her shoulders, even without looking directly, the mere atmosphere alone was grinding against her sanity.
