Chapter 107: Not Again?
That warm yet icy voice instantly strangled the atmosphere into silence.
Even the natural world itself seemed to sink beneath the weight of that tone.
Then, abruptly, a clear voice cut through the stillness.
“We haven’t even started working yet and you’re already showing yourself? Don’t tell me you’re getting nervous already, Master Mirror?”
In the past, whenever Lannor faced the crushing pressure surrounding the creature, he had always referred to him as the Man of Glass.
A subconscious attempt to diminish the opponent, to steady his own nerves.
Proof of the disadvantage buried deep in his mind.
After all, before a being who openly manipulated reality and toyed with time itself, remaining seated across from him, speaking with faint mockery instead of fear or flattery, already felt like a considerable achievement.
But today, Lannor addressed him as “master.”
And the expression on that handsome face looked utterly sincere.
Master ... don’t tell me you’re upset because I found a way to solve this without signing your contract?
Surely not.
You’re not about to flip the table over this, are you?
The look on Lannor’s face could have infuriated any normal person who had just been cornered.
And he was doing it deliberately.
Of course he was.
Being entangled with a horrifying thing that clearly wanted something from him, carrying all that pressure without letting it show, already demanded monstrous self-control from Lannor.
And now, when the bastard had finally crawled out because his scheme was on the verge of collapse, if Lannor did not stomp directly onto his face while he had the chance, the frustration would haunt him until he was three hundred years old.
Unfortunately, Gaunter O’Dimm had little in common with normal people.
Or with people at all.
Not only did he show no anger, even the smile on his face remained perfectly unchanged.
If anything, the way he looked at Lannor became even more interested.
He loved surprises.
That was the whole point of existing.
Without surprises, where was the joke?
“I must admit, I was in rather good spirits last night, so I went elsewhere for a bit of amusement.”
“I noticed someone interfered with a portal. But I did not sense that it was you passing through it.”
The first sentence was directed at the Lady of the Lake.
The second, at Lannor.
“I truly cannot stop that heap of rotten flesh from speaking, Lannor. This time ... you win.”
Gaunter O’Dimm rubbed his hands together as he stared at the witcher like a starving man gazing at a feast.
And that expression told Lannor everything he needed to know.
This matter was far from over.
“Until the day you need me, or I need you, I shall not appear again.”
“And Lady...”
The bald, shabby merchant turned toward the Lady and the nymph. His face remained utterly expressionless.
“The reason I am letting this opportunity slip away so easily is because of you. Please drive that thing away quickly. Its continued presence here makes everyone uncomfortable.”
“You are dangerous as well, Gaunter O’Dimm.”
The Lady stopped idly twining her hair around her fingers as she replied meaningfully.
But Master Mirror seemed entirely oblivious.
“I am dangerous, yes. But I obey the rules. Most of the time I even make them myself, yet I still follow them, do I not?”
“And those things? Those chaotic, mindless, principleless beasts? What sort of lunatic could stand beside such trash and feel at ease?”
When speaking with Lannor, Master Mirror had always appeared courteous and refined.
Even moments ago, while Lannor mocked him to his face, he had merely looked on like an amused adult tolerating a child’s tantrum.
