Chapter 106: The Last Light Faded
The still waters of the pool suddenly churned without wind or rain. Ripples rolled violently outward, the surface boiling like water over a fire.
A figure slowly rose from the depths.
Lake-green skin. Dark green hair. The same naked form as the nymph beside her.
Yet where the nymph possessed only the untamed beauty of nature, the Lady of the Lake seemed to glow faintly from beneath her skin itself, soft radiance flowing over every curve.
By Lannor’s standards, sharpened through years of watching short videos from his old world, she looked as though someone had added a divine filter.
The difference between her and an ordinary nymph became obvious at a glance.
Once the Lady emerged, the nymph simply stood and walked over to a nearby stone at the edge of the pool. She sat there gracefully, facing Lannor together with her mistress.
The witcher took that as a sign the Lady cared little for maintaining divine grandeur.
So he relaxed his own ceremonial posture as well.
“Greetings, witcher.”
The voice was nothing like the thunderous or majestic tone Lannor had imagined. Speaking with the Lady of the Lake felt little different from speaking with the nymph.
“In person, your face is even more striking than your reflection upon the water.”
Lannor pressed his lips together.
Right. Very grounded goddess.
“Lady, I came here to...”
He shook his head slightly, intending to move directly to the matter of mutual assistance.
But before he could continue, the Lady interrupted him with a smile.
“You wish to make a dead man speak. To save more innocent children. That is admirable. But from what I see...”
“This man did not die by accident.”
“You have caught the attention of some kind of ‘thing,’ haven’t you, Lannor?”
The witcher’s calm thoughts stirred violently beneath those few sentences.
His cat eyes narrowed sharply.
“So you know what that ‘thing’ truly is?”
The Lady spread her hands with elegant ease.
“An ancient evil from beyond the world. That concept alone is enough for you. Anything deeper would be too much for you to bear right now.”
Lannor ground his back teeth together.
Too much even to endure the knowledge of it ... The phrasing was almost identical to Gaunter O’Dimm’s own explanation of himself.
She truly knew of his existence.
Leather creaked softly beneath the pressure of Lannor’s gloves.
When facing the Man of Glass, he had remained outwardly composed, even faintly mocking. But deep down he understood perfectly well that compared to that creature’s level of existence, he himself might be nothing more than a tiny figure acting out a story upon a scrap of paper.
Dragging Ubank’s corpse here despite everything, asking after necromancy, refusing to let the trail die, all of it had been resistance.
A stubborn refusal to kneel.
Yet part of him had always wondered, if any of those efforts could truly matter, then why would a being capable of seeing through time itself simply allow them to continue?
But now a goddess stood before him, openly acknowledging her understanding of Gaunter O’Dimm.
And understanding meant he was not untouchable.
“Forgive me, Lady. I assumed you were merely a lesser deity dwelling within the lake. Whether this succeeded or failed, I intended to treat it as an attempt. That is why I concealed ... certain matters.”
“But even if it failed, so long as you truly tried, I would still honor our agreement and drive Dagong away for you.”
Lannor bowed his head sincerely.
The Lady only laughed softly and waved away the apology. Then she walked from the center of the pool to sit beside the nymph, leaning comfortably against her.
She truly possessed none of the distance one expected from divinity.
