Chapter 104: The Witch Beneath the Tower

“You want a corpse to speak.”

The Drowner Sacrifice’s tone carried clear disapproval.

Its way of thinking likely belonged to those who followed nature’s order. Life and death, to creatures like that, were boundaries never meant to blur.

“I dislike this. But if the Lady seeks you, she will help you. The details, you must speak with the Lady’s Operational Courier. She swims there.”

The brass breathing mask tilted as the Drowner Sacrifice pointed vaguely with its staff toward the shoreline, then said no more.

It disliked Lannor’s intention, but it also had no desire to oppose the will of the Lady of the Lake.

Lannor understood that sort of thinking. He nodded and followed the direction along the water’s edge.

Less than fifty meters from the altar, in a quiet bend of the lake, he found the so-called Operational Courier.

Before seeing it, Lannor had assumed it would be another drowner.

He could not have been more wrong.

The creature standing in the moonlit water was entirely naked, her skin the color of deep lake-green.

She resembled a slender elven woman.

Pointed ears, delicate features, thick green hair hanging loosely across her bare body.

Lannor made no effort to hide his footsteps, and the creature frolicking freely beneath the moon sensed the witcher’s arrival with ease.

“Well, aren’t you handsome, human. Want to sleep with me?”

A warm, natural smile rested on her face, yet the first words from her mouth nearly choked Lannor silent.

He had opened his mouth to speak, only to stand there dumbly with nothing coming out.

She rose from the water and walked toward shore, displaying her body openly and without shame.

“You’re a nymph? If it’s purely about bedplay, I’d rather find a succubus.”

Lannor’s eyes wandered over her just as naturally while he answered dryly.

“Well, I’d love to tell you nymphs aren’t bad in bed either, but if you’re not interested, then fine.”

Apparently she had only wanted a taste because Lannor was attractive. There was no deep attachment behind it.

“So you’re the witcher the Lady needs.”

The nymph circled him curiously.

Though she had just emerged from the lake, her body carried only the scent of spring water.

Lannor’s understanding of flesh, bone, and musculature had become extensive by now. From a few simple steps, he could already tell her skeletal structure and muscle distribution differed subtly from a human’s.

Still.

Beautiful was beautiful.

“I spoke with the Drowner Sacrifice at the altar. I don’t mind doing work for the Lady, but I would prefer this arrangement benefit both sides.”

“To make the dead speak...” Even the nymph frowned at that.

Creatures like her were beings of nature. By instinct, they recoiled from unnatural magic.

“In earlier times, the Lady would never have granted such a request. But circumstances have changed. So this can be done.”

The Drowner Sacrifice’s solemnity, together with the nymph’s reluctance, stirred Lannor’s curiosity toward whatever the Lady of the Lake intended to confront.

“If the Lady is already so powerful, why would she need a mere witcher? And what exactly do you mean by ‘circumstances have changed’?”

“That is already another question, witcher.”

The nymph shook her head, green hair sliding across her chest before she brushed it aside lightly.

“The monster you must face is called Dagong. And it is also the key to making the dead speak.”

“How so?”

Lannor tilted his head, puzzled.

Against physical monsters, he had become fairly efficient at killing. But the moment curses or magical energies entered the picture, the limits of his knowledge showed themselves immediately.

“Dagong is not native to this world. It came through the Conjunction of the Spheres. Its foreign, corrupt power can be used as material to drive a corpse without disrupting the local balance of power, without unleashing spirits or draining life from the land. But that does not mean there are no dangers.”

“What dangers?”
