Chapter 19

They went to the table on Monday.

The three of them crossed the cafeteria together — Komiko slightly ahead, Katie at her right shoulder, Yuki at her left. The formation had changed. What had been two was now three, and the three of them moved through the lunchtime crowd with the easy certainty of people who knew exactly where they were going and who they were going there as.

Two silver chokers. Two gold hearts. Both catching the light.

Anyone who knew the language read it before they arrived.

Reese looked up when she heard them coming. Her eyes moved — the quick practiced sweep, landing on Komiko, then Katie, then Yuki, then the pendant at Yuki’s throat. She held there for a moment. Something moved through her expression that was more than recognition.

She set down her fork.

The table had gone quiet in the particular way it did when something worth paying attention to was happening.

Reese looked at Komiko for a long moment. Then she said:

“I really admire you.”

Quietly. Directly. With none of the social scaffolding people put around things they mean.

“I understand your decision.” A pause. “Your courage is beyond words.”

Komiko held her gaze steadily. She said nothing. There was nothing that needed to be said — Reese was not asking for a response, she was simply naming what she saw, clearly and without ceremony, the way people who speak plainly do when something is worth the plainness.

Reese leaned back slightly. Something settled in her expression — a decision made, a door opened.

“You and your girls are welcome at this table,” she said. “Anytime. Anywhere.” She looked between the three of them. “That’s not a courtesy. That’s a standing invitation.”

Around the table the other girls nodded. Small movements, unhurried, the quiet consensus of people who had heard what was said and agreed with it completely.

Katie touched the pendant briefly at her throat. The habit. The grounding.

Komiko looked at Reese. “Thank you,” she said.

“Don’t thank me.” A slight smile. “Just sit down.” She glanced past Komiko to where Yuki stood at her left shoulder, eyes slightly down, present and still. “And are you going to introduce your sister to us?”

Komiko turned slightly toward Yuki.

Yuki looked up. Those careful eyes moving around the table — assessing, the old habit, reading for threat and finding none. Finding instead a circle of faces that were simply looking at her with the open curiosity of people who had no agenda except to know her.

She straightened slightly. Her hand moved once to the pendant at her throat — finding it, feeling it warm under her fingers, grounding herself in it the way Katie grounded herself in hers.

“This is Yuki,” Komiko said. Simply. With everything contained in the simplicity — the love, the claim, the full weight of what had happened in a bedroom two nights ago and what it meant going forward. “My sister. She is mine.”

Three words. The most complete sentence she knew.
