Nox stepped out of the tent the elk had died in.

The camp was still smoking. Canvas hung in strips. A jeep lay on its side with the radio hissing to nobody. He looked the same as he always did, layered red and blue, tattoos dark through the fur, ornate clothes that fit an ancient time, heavily decorated, and he had the cut of a panther who does not run. The expression was the only change. Sour. Tired of the mess.

Two panthers waited with their ears low.

“Roan’s big white wolf,” one of them said. “Zariel.”

Nox’s eyes moved over the wreckage. “He walked in with a song and a machine gun and opened the cages. That is what you are telling me.”

They nodded.

“He is a problem.” Nox started walking. Glass cracked under his boots. “Iron skin is a nuisance. If he runs the trials a second time, the Temple may decide the nuisance is not enough. An innate gift on top of that body would be a real threat, perhaps...”

A shape broke from the dark between two burned tents. Insect legs. Too many. Fast, the way the little ones were fast, a blur aimed at his chest.

Nox did not lift a finger.

The creature split in half before it reached him, a clean cut as if a katana had passed through chitin and nothing else. The two pieces tumbled past his shoulders and hit the dirt behind him. Black blood hung in the air where the cut had been, a sheet of it, suspended, refusing to fall. Nox looked at it. He did something small with one paw, a flick that was not quite a gesture. The blood dropped all at once and splashed into the mud. None of it touched him. It was not the big Reaver, just one of the little ones.

He did not break stride.

“The Reaver is a loss,” he said. “I no longer have an interest in taming that thing. Let it wander. Let it kill whatever it wants in this world. This camp is finished. Burn the rest of it. All of the evidence. I will find a way to keep a white wolf from walking into my work again.”

The panthers moved to obey. Nox kept walking through what was left, regal and displeased, already done with the place.

Later, in a darker room that was not the camp, Lucian sat where he had been put.

He was still sick from the serum. Fur dull. Eyes not quite tracking. Nox stood beside him and did not blame him for any of it. One paw rested on the smaller panther’s shoulder, brief, the way a man touches something he intends to keep.

“The insects cannot be tamed,” Nox said. “We have made progress in other ways.”

He stepped toward a cage that took up the far wall. Massive. Dark metal, the bars thick enough to make a lie of the word cage. He opened the door himself and went in.

The head of a Void Dragon loomed out of the black. Purple lines under the scales. Heat that was not quite heat. It lowered its skull until the nose rested against Nox’s open palm, and Nox caressed it like a dog that had learned its owner’s hand. He spoke to it low, not a command, the voice he used when he was pleased with something dangerous.

Lucian’s eyes went wide.

Further in, where the light failed, two more shapes shifted. Scales. The scrape of something large remembering it had weight. Two more Void Dragons, waiting in the dark behind the first, and Nox did not look back at Lucian when he said, almost gentle,

“You see. Not everything from the other side has to be a loss.”

Stark was over the sickness in two days. An anthro deer, no regeneration ability, but a good immune system it seems. Not that anyone knows the true nature of the sickness from earning the psychic link, the one he had to take Cass’ cum to earn.

The link had hit him harder than he expected, Cass’s void still sitting strange in the back of his head, but the fever broke and the deer was upright again before the pack had finished arguing about whether to call a medic. He went straight back to the work. Politics for a pack that was still benched. Hours with Roan at the kitchen table, maps and KnotHub numbers and the question of what a human public would swallow. Then, when the ideas ran down, he found Khepri.

He spent the night pretending the videos were the point he was in the hyena’s room.
