The dark came in pieces.
Zariel’s chest burned and then it did not. The river filled the space where air was supposed to be. He kicked once more against the snag and felt nothing useful happen. Iron skin. Trial gift. All of it sitting in a body that could not get one foot free of a stick in a current.
His mind went to the pack anyway.
Roan on the range. Cass’s glow in a dark bedroom. Khepri behind a camera. Stark on the roof with a plan. Remi saying he was not pack and still showing up. The resistance jeeps pulling away from a hollow he had chosen to walk back into.
He had wanted to do more. That was the resentment, thin and hot even as the cold took him. One elk. One camp. One stupid song blasting while he played tank. Nox was still out there. Lucian. Malachi. The war. He had wanted to be the thing that changed the math, and instead he was a white wolf stuck under a mountain river with a monster waiting on the bank.
The relief came in right after it.
The elk was gone. Cass could sleep. The house could be a house again. If this was the price, he could live with not living through it.
He thought of Roan last, and then not last.
He thought of Cass’s voice in the link.
He thought of Kiran.
The little fox first, if he was being honest. Brat. Heat. The way Kiran climbed into laps, expecially his. Zariel loved him most. He had never said it that cleanly out loud. He sent it anyway, or tried to, while the dark climbed his vision.
Love you. Especially you.
Then there was nothing.
The next thing was coughing.
Water left him in ugly bursts. Metal under his back. Helicopter blades humming. Cold air ripping in. A mouth on his mouth, forcing breath where the river had been. Golden eyes. Black fur. Roan!
Zariel came up into it gasping, paws grabbing at whatever they found, which turned out to be his Alpha.
“Easy,” Roan said against his muzzle. “I have you. I have you.”
Kiran was already talking. Of course he was. Soaked to the skin, ears plastered down, voice running at a pitch that meant he had been terrified and was now covering it with noise.
“He dove in the second we were over you. Just went. I thought that thing was going to take him off the bank, I swear I did, and then he had you and I was screaming at Dante to hold the bird and...”
“Kiran.” Cass’s voice, shaky. “Let him breathe.”
Zariel coughed again and found the rest of them in pieces. Helicopter wash. Wet rock. The river still running like it had not tried to bury him. No demon on the bank that he could see. Gone, or waiting farther off.
He looked at Roan first. Then Kiran. Then the others.
“Thank you,” he rasped. “All of you. I meant it. About not coming back. You came anyway.”
Roan’s ears were still flat. “You can be angry at me later for breaking the rule.”
Kiran grabbed Zariel’s uncut shoulder and shook it, too hard, because he did not know what else to do with his paws. “Do not ever send my mind is going dark again. I will kill you myself.”
Zariel huffed a laugh that turned into another cough. “Noted.”
Cass crouched close, void-ring bright. “The elk?”
“Done,” Zariel said. “That much I finished.”
“Along with the whole fucking camp. You shoulda played March of the Valkeries! Er ... Ride I mean. I think. Or the Terminator music. That woulda been pretty funny. Dun dun DUN DUN dun.”
Zariel reached up and caressed his fox’s cheek. “I know you and Remi are tasting each other lately, but you gotta spend more time with me, Kiran. I’ll gladly pull your tail.”
Kiran beamed a smile and wagged.
Later the pack house felt too warm and too small.
They came down off the adrenaline in wet towels and leftover silence. Dante was already at the table. No lecture and no suspension. He had decided against punishment on the ride back, or maybe in the moment he watched Roan go over the skid into black water. He was there for the debrief, and he was glad the elk was gone. He said so up front.
“That threat in your walls is finished,” Dante said. “I will not pretend I liked the method. I also will not pretend I am sorry about the result.”
Lir stood near the window with his rifle still slung, listening.
Zariel told it from the tent out. The camp. The cages. The little hunters. The blue pocked cell. The pass. The thing that cut the air and left purple moons hanging behind the slashes. The sword falling in half with no sound. The river. The fear of water.
Lir’s eyes went wide. So did Dante’s.
“A fucking Reaver?” Lir said. “Nox brought a Reaver over here?”
The pack looked between them.
“What is that?” Cass asked.
Lir dragged a paw down his muzzle. For a second he seemed younger, or just more tired.
“A monster from the Void,” he said. “The Void is not empty. It has wildlife. It has worse than wildlife. Most of that should never touch this side. A Reaver is rare even there. So far, nobody has killed one. And it is not just the body.” His ears pinned. “It has a Void power. A nasty one.”
He stopped there.
Dante’s mouth was a thin line.
Kiran butted in before Lir could take another breath.
“Hold on. He got cut. He is not supposed to get cut. They told him nothing goes through that skin.”
Lir nodded, tired already. “The talons are the power. Those slashes that hang in the air. We call it a Void Slice.”
Zariel’s ears flicked. “I was told the Temple made me iron. I walked through a camp of rifles. Then that thing opened my shoulder like I was still ordinary.”
