Previously, in Lust and the Void
Cass was a human sharing an apartment with Roan, a black wolf who worked for an anthro resistance the rest of the world did not know existed. Secret longing turned into sex, then into something neither of them could walk back. Roan stopped pretending. Cass became his pup.
The rest of the pack followed. Zariel, a massive white wolf. Kiran, a mouthy red fox. Later Khepri, a hyena who films everything. Panther attacks and a gun in a dresser drawer pulled Cass out of roommate life and into a war. A live KnotHub shoot unmasked him. The pack moved him to a cedar safehouse. A family visit ended with panther claws in his gut.
While he healed, Roan offered him a transformation. Fifteen days of denial, then a Void Tear. The Tear was supposed to rebuild him from a reality where he had been born a wolf. It did more than that. Cass came back midnight black, purple-ringed eyes, void in his blood. His cum opened a psychic link. The original pack can feel each other now. Shields exist. Kiran forgets to use them.
Roan and Zariel had already run the Temple Trials before Cass ever saw one. Roan’s reward is a strength he can call up, muscle and vein and more force than a wolf should have. Zariel’s is iron skin. Bullets skip off him. Blades skate. He came home a walking tank and has been angry ever since that it has not been enough.
Nox’Thar is the other side of that power. A tattooed panther, void-touched, lover of a green-eyed panther named Lucian. Nox has been running underlings through the trials and pulling things out of the Void that do not belong here. Three of them matter. Malachi, a white tiger with cursed silver claws and teeth. Lucian, who came home able to become shadow, and who loves Nox even while trying to stop what the trials are making of him. And an elk dreamwalker, Oni, who put Cass in a nightmare the pack could not wake him from and later walked them out of their own house.
Two resistance fighters keep landing in the pack’s orbit without quite joining it. Remi is a fennec who lost his village to rogue eagles as a child, never learned the magic his people start young, and does not trust packs after the last two betrayed him. Lir is the leopard sniper who stays in the trees behind him. A Void Tear rebuilt Lir’s lost leg from a reality where he still had it, and left void in his blood. He is the one who can name what the Void actually does. Remi has started letting Kiran close. He still says he is not pack.
Lucian turned on a convoy and helped Cass escape a Void Dragon on a mountain pass. Cass tore a hole in an armored truck by reaching a reality where that wall was wood. The FBI still took Lucian. Drugged, he told a camera about Nox, secret human allies, and a war the edits made look like every anthro’s idea. Attacks on anthros started the same day. Nox walked into that prison alone, bullets missing him, and carried Lucian out.
The pack cannot go public. Dante, a resistance lion, will not allow it. So they got famous instead. KnotHub, channel name Roan’s Pack, propaganda wrapped in porn. Stark, a young deer dreamwalker with a strategist’s head, watched the plan and asked to join. Khepri asked too. The rite is oral worship of the Alpha from midnight to noon. They did it. They are pack. The link is separate. That still takes Cass.
A recon on a Nox camp was supposed to be footage. Stark brought Conspiracy Creep, a raccoon YouTuber, to “steal” it. Lir put the truth on camera while they watched Void beasts hunt a human and an anthro in a pen: the resistance is the target, anthros and humans are on the same side, Nox is the enemy. On the way out they saw the dreamwalker elk, unconscious on a medical bed.
Zariel would not leave him there.
Roan could not stop him. No extraction. Zariel shook his Alpha’s paw, hit record, and walked back into the camp alone.
Zariel walked into the camp like he owned the dirt.
For a few seconds nobody understood what they were looking at. A white wolf in torn black gear, too much iron on his back, moving down the lane between tents as if the patrols were decoration. Then a panther near the motor pool saw the icy blue eyes and swore.
“That’s him. That’s the trial wolf.”
Rifles came up. Fire opened. Lead hit his chest, his shoulders, his arms, and skipped off the way rain skipped off a truck hood. The first man to shoot him kept shooting anyway, because the mind did not catch up to the body in time. Zariel felt every impact as a tap. Not pain. Not even weight. Just the proof that the Temple had done what it promised and that Roan was already miles away, angry, and right.
He smiled.
You wanted tides, he thought. Here.
He lifted the heavy gun and turned the hollow into noise.
Tents jumped. Vehicles sparked. Someone screamed for a line and never finished the sentence. Return fire found him from three directions and barely moved him. A fox in Nox’s colors dumped a whole mag into his ribs, stared at the unmarked fur, and ran. Another panther froze in the open with his ears flat, as if waiting for the trick to end. Zariels big guns screamed through the camp like a dragon, the noise and chaos spilling forth.
Zariel unslung the speaker he had hauled in on his back, set it in the mud, and kicked the track on.
Muse filled the camp. Knights of Cydonia. That opening gallop, then the whole stupid glorious charge of it. He had picked the song on purpose. If Creep’s cameras were going to steal this, the world was going to hear it too. No quiet recon. No polite resistance. A walking tank with a soundtrack.
Chaos followed on beat.
“Fall back to the west tents!”
“It isn’t dropping!”
“Cursed rounds, cursed rounds, does anyone have...”
When the big gun ran dry he dropped it in the dirt and brought up the launchers. Two primitive looking grenade tossers, vulgar, metal, mean. The camp tried to breathe after the first storm. Zariel was not interested in anyone breathing. The chorus hit as fire bloomed through canvas and metal, orange and white punching holes in the night. He walked while he worked, a white shape in the strobe of his own assault, gunfire sparking off him like it had somewhere better to be.
A cook stumbled out of a mess tent with a pistol and no idea what he was pointing at. Zariel passed him without slowing. A medic dragged a wounded jackal behind a crate and stared at Zariel as if looking at a natural disaster. Somebody on a radio kept saying the same word. Impossible.
Good, Zariel thought. Let them say it into a camera.
