Cass was already awake when Roan noticed.

Not sitting up. Not speaking. Just on his back in their bed with his eyes open, staring at the ceiling like it had become a door. The purple-blue ring in his irises was blazing hard enough to throw color across the sheets. His breathing was slow and wrong, the kind of rhythm that did not belong to a body at rest.

“Cass.” Roan leaned over him, a heavy paw on his chest. “Talk to me. What’s wrong?”

No answer. Cass’s ears did not even twitch.

Stark was in the doorway before Roan called for him. The young buck took one look at the glow and shook his head.

“That is not a dreamwalker,” he said. “If it was the elk, I would feel the seam. This is coming from him. Or through him.”

Roan’s voice dropped. “Can you pull him out?”

“Not from out here. If I yank blind I could tear something. I have to go in alone.”

They dragged a spare mattress in and shoved it against the big bed. Stark lay down on it without taking off his shirt, set two fingers against Cass’s forehead, and shut his eyes. For a second nothing happened. Then Stark’s body went slack and the room filled with the same faint ozone smell that clung to Cass after he used the Void.

The field was too soft.

Night grass brushed Cass’s ankles like it wanted to keep him. The moon hung huge and clean overhead. Wind moved through the stalks in long, whispering pulls. Ahead of them a white Temple rose out of the earth as if it had always been waiting, taller than any structure Cass had seen on the waking side, its face lit the color of bone.

Cass walked toward it like someone had tied a string through his ribs.

Stark appeared at his shoulder, antlers pale in the moonlight. “Cass.”

“I have to go in,” Cass said. The words came out slow as if he were drugged.

Stark did not argue. “Then I am at your side.”

The first hall was wide enough to swallow sound. Moonlight followed them in, then gave up, and the stone itself began to glow from within. White guardians waited in the arches. Void faces with no hurry, just sentries watching, until they turned and walked, and Cass followed because his feet already knew the way.

Every room after that held the dead.

A leopard torn open the way the Temple had taken him on Zariel’s floor. A bear crushed under fallen stone. A human curled around a missing arm. They lay where they had fallen in the trials, bodies finished, eyes not. Those eyes tracked Cass and Stark across each chamber, wet and aware.

Cass’s voice was a whisper. “Is this still just a dream?”

Stark did not answer.

The Temple spoke without a mouth. The words arrived in the walls, in the floor, in the base of Cass’s skull.

Climb. Your fate is at the top.

They climbed.

The illusions hit on the stairs, too fast to hold, bright as lightning behind the eyes. Roan taking a blow that folded him. Kiran lifted off his feet by something with too many limbs. Zariel standing over a body that might have been his own. Khepri reaching out and not making it. Remi’s ears flat in a hallway filling with shadow. Each image snapped away before Cass could grab it, then another slammed in.

“I won’t let that happen,” Cass said. The glow in his eyes burned hotter even here. “I won’t bring them here. I am not running your trials.”

The light in the stone warmed from white to a sick pale gold.

You already have. You already will. You already are.

“No.” Cass stopped on the stair. The guardians halted with him, faces turning in unison. “Zariel already gave you blood. That is enough. I am not walking my pack into this place.”

The gold deepened. Dust shook out of the ceiling.

The marked one does not refuse. The Void opened you. The top is owed your body.

Stark bared his teeth at the ceiling. “He said no. You can shove your prophecy. You made Nox’Thar. That is enough to know whose side you are on.”

The Temple’s voice lost its patience.

Climb.

Cass planted his feet. “I will not.”

The glow went red at the edges. The dead in the rooms below opened their mouths without sound. One of the guardians took a step closer, stone grinding.
