The living room was quiet except for the low crackle of the fireplace and the slow, wet sound of Roan’s knot still locked inside Cass on the couch.

Cass lay on his back across the big sectional, head resting in Zariel’s broad white lap like he was a warm fur pillow. The big wolf’s paw moved in slow, lazy strokes through midnight fur. Cass’s mouth was slightly open, breathing deep and even. Every so often his ears gave a tiny twitch, but he stayed under.

Roan sat between Cass’s thighs, black fur pressed to pale belly, hips locked tight. His knot pulsed every few seconds, sending another slow pulse of warmth into his mate. He was not thrusting. Just staying and letting his pup sleep while safely filled by his Alpha’s wolfhood. Roan thought Cass looked soo peaceful.

Zariel’s eyes lifted from Cass’s face to Roan’s.

“He’s out,” the white wolf murmured, voice barely above a whisper. “Really out.”

Roan gave a small nod, ears angled back. He kept one paw resting on Cass’s hip, thumb stroking the soft fur there.

Zariel’s voice stayed low. “You’ve been carrying it all day. Talk to me.”

Roan was silent for a long moment. His knot gave another thick pulse. Cum leaked around the seal and trickled down onto the blanket beneath them.

“That elk,” Roan finally said. “The dreamwalker. What he did to Cass wasn’t normal. I’ve fought dreamwalkers before. They can scare you, twist memories, make you feel like you’re drowning. But that? That was solid. Cass was gone. Completely gone. I barely pulled him out.”

Zariel’s paw never stopped moving through Cass’s hair. “You think the temple enhanced him.”

The three of Nox’Thar’s minions that survived the underwater trials wasted no time causing trouble in the world and for the resistence. Tales had spread already.

“I know it did.” Roan’s voice was rough. “Same way it gave Malachi those silver claws. Same way it gave Lucian shadow-walking. That elk walked out of the temple missing a leg and somehow stronger than any dreamwalker I’ve ever heard of. And he locked onto Cass like he already knew exactly where the soft spots were.”

Silence stretched. The fire popped.

Roan’s ears flattened further. “If anything happens to him ... it’s on me. I pulled him into this. I transformed him. I made him pack and took away his old life, telling him things would be better with me. If that elk takes him, or breaks him, or worse ... that’s my fault. Every single piece of it.”

Zariel’s free paw reached across and settled on the back of Roan’s neck, heavy and warm.

“You didn’t force the bond,” Zariel said quietly. “Cass chose. He keeps choosing. Every day. And you’re not the only one who would burn the world down for him. You’re just the one who gets to carry the guilt loudest.”

Roan’s eyes closed. His knot throbbed again, slower this time, the last of the release finally tapering off.

After another few minutes he carefully worked himself free. The wet sound was soft. A thick trickle of cum followed, spilling onto the blanket. Roan wiped what he could with a clean corner of the throw, gentle so he wouldn’t wake the sleeping wolf. Cass made a small, unhappy noise at the emptiness and rolled onto his side, face pressing deeper into Zariel’s thigh. His tail draped loosely over Roan’s leg.

The three of them settled. Roan curled against Cass’s back. Zariel kept stroking. The psychic link opened just a little, warm and quiet.

Cass’s mind was soft and drifting. A normal dream about Roan. The stretch of a knot. Nothing dark. Nothing sharp. Just pure, simple want.

Zariel exhaled. “He’s fine right now.”

Roan pressed his muzzle to the back of Cass’s neck and breathed him in. “Yeah.”

One by one their breathing slowed. The fire burned lower. The link stayed open, a gentle shared current. Sleep took them.

In the dream, the living room looked the same, only softer around the edges and warmer. The fire was brighter and the couch felt deeper.

Cass was still on his back, but Roan was above him now, golden eyes glowing, black fur catching the light. The weight of him felt perfect.

“Hey, pup,” dream-Roan murmured, voice low and fond. He leaned down and licked slowly up Cass’s throat. “You’re so warm tonight.”

Cass smiled, half-lidded, body already loose and ready. He reached up and ran his fingers through the thick black ruff. Everything felt right.

Somewhere far away, in the real world, Zariel’s ears twitched. Roan’s breathing hitched once. Both of them tried to surface, but something heavy and soft pressed down on their minds, like thick blankets layered over thought. They could feel the wrongness starting to seep in, but their bodies stayed locked in sleep. The link between them and Cass stayed open, but the signal was getting cloudy.

In the dream, Roan nuzzled under Cass’s jaw and spoke against his skin.

“Come with me for a minute. Outside. Just us. The night air will feel good.”

Cass made a sleepy sound of agreement. He didn’t question it. Why would he? It was Roan.

Dream-Roan stood and held out a big black paw. Cass took it. The moment their paws touched, the dream thickened. The living room faded at the edges. The front door of the pack house appeared in front of them, already open to cool night air and moonlight.

Cass’s real body shifted on the couch. His legs swung down. He stood, eyes still closed, breathing slow and even. Sleepwalking.

Zariel’s ears pinned hard in his sleep. Roan’s claws flexed against the cushion. Both of them pushed against the weight holding them under, but the pressure only increased, warm and almost gentle, like being held down by someone who loved you too much.

In the dream, Roan’s golden eyes stayed locked on Cass’s.

“That’s it,” the false voice murmured. “Just a short walk. I’ve got you.”

Cass stepped through the open door and into the dark.
