The pack house was alive with noise when Zariel finally returned.
The big white-and-gray wolf stepped through the front door, scarred muzzle and icy blue eyes scanning the room. Before he could even drop his bag, Kiran let out a high, excited yip and launched himself at the massive wolf.
Zariel caught him easily, strong arms wrapping around the lithe red fox as Kiran’s legs locked around his waist, the size difference stark. The fox immediately started grinding against him, tail wagging wildly.
“Zariel! You’re back! Fuck, I missed you! Take me right here, big guy. Right now. I don’t care who sees,” Kiran purred, already licking and nipping at the bigger wolf’s neck.
Zariel chuckled, his vocal cords deep and rumbling, but gently set the fox back on his feet. “Later, little troublemaker. I’ve been on the road for days. Let me breathe first.”
Kiran pouted dramatically but didn’t argue, instead clinging to Zariel’s side like a happy barnacle. The fox was a loving and grounding part of the pack.
Roan stepped forward and pulled Zariel into a firm, brotherly hug, clapping him on the back. “Good to have you home.”
Cass stood a little behind them, still getting used to moving in his new body. His sleek black fur caught the light with that faint bluish-purple shimmer. Zariel’s icy blue eyes locked onto him immediately.
The big scarred wolf stared for a long moment, ears perking slightly. Then he licked his black trimmed wolf lips slowly.
“Well ... look at you,” Zariel rumbled, voice low with clear appreciation. He stepped closer, towering over Cass, and slowly circled him once, taking in the new midnight-black coat, the lean powerful build, the way the iridescent sheen shifted under the lights. “You clean up nice as a wolf, pup. That color ... never seen anything like it. Suits you.”
Cass’s ears flicked back in shy pride, tail giving a small wag. “Thanks ... it still feels weird sometimes. But good weird. Now I feel like I belong and understand you guys more.”
Zariel nodded, a rare small smile tugging at his scarred muzzle. “You look stronger already. Less breakable.”
The mood shifted as Zariel dropped his bag and got serious.
“I’ve got new intel,” he said. “The panthers are transporting something important in a few days. Moving at night, silently. Sticking to back roads and moutain paths. The council wants us to intercept the convoy and find out what the hell it is. They specifically want Cass to go too.”
Roan’s ears twitched. “Cass? He just turned.”
“They know,” Zariel replied. “They think his new senses might pick up on something we can’t. And ... they want to see what he can do.”
“Damn council ... whatever they think they found in my pup’s blood, he is still just a new wolf. He’s not experienced. He doesn’t have any special abilities ... and I’ll be damned if I even think about having him go through the temple trials...”
“The council can’t demand that of anyone, anyway,” Zariel said.
They spent the next hour talking strategy around the coffee table in the living room, the same living room where Cass had mounted Kiran early that morning, pleasuring the fox with his new wolf body. They discussed routes, possible threats, who would take point. Cass listened quietly, still adjusting to how his new ears could pick up every small sound in the room.
Later that night, Cass lay sprawled on the big bed in the master bedroom, freshly showered, his black fur still slightly damp. Roan had gone off to speak with the council about final details for the mission.
The door opened softly.
Zariel stepped in, the big white-and-gray wolf filling the doorway. His icy blue eyes immediately found Cass on the bed.
“Mind some company?” Zariel asked, voice low and rough.
Cass’s ears perked. “Not at all.”
Cass really liked Zariel, even though the giant seemed to be lost in thought a lot, or glum, or brooding, he was also gentle and made Cass feel warm and safe.
Zariel moved closer, shedding his clothes as he approached. He climbed onto the bed, the mattress dipping under his massive weight. One large paw slid slowly up Cass’s thigh, claws lightly grazing the sleek black fur.
“You look good like this,” Zariel murmured, leaning in to drag his nose along Cass’s neck, inhaling deeply. “Stronger. Smell different too ... wilder.” His icy blue eyes darkened with clear hunger. “If you’re not in the mood after everything, just say it.”
Cass’s new tail flicked and brushed Zariel’s thigh. “I’m definitely in the mood. And I had a feeling you would enjoy this form more, Z. You always seemed to think I was weak, a burden I think.”
