Chapter 1

The letter took her four days.

Not because Aiyana Begay struggled with words. She had written her school’s winning essay on Diné water rights in one afternoon, age ten, and watched her teacher read it twice before saying anything. Words came to her the way directions came to her grandfather on unmarked land — not from signs, but from something internal and reliable.

The four days were because she kept stopping to make sure she was right.

She sat at her grandmother’s kitchen table each evening after the dishes were done, her notebook open beside her phone, and went through the numbers again. Federal databases. Tribal enrollment records. State crime statistics. News archives going back to 1980. She had built her own spreadsheet six months ago, entering every case she could verify, every name she could find, flagging every entry where the resolution column was empty.

The resolution column was almost always empty.

But the harder truth, the one that had kept her awake the night the idea first came to her, wasn’t in the spreadsheet. It was in the searches that returned nothing. Names her grandmother had spoken. Women from the chapter houses and the trading post and the cousins of cousins who had simply stopped being mentioned, the way a word disappears from a language — not all at once, but quietly, until one day you realize no one is saying it anymore.

She wasn’t in any database. Not missing. Not deceased. Not a case number. Not a statistic.

Not counted.

Her name was Lena Begay. She had been twenty-three years old. She had left her daughter with her parents one morning and walked toward a life that didn’t hold her, and the world had simply closed over the place where she had been.
