“Do you think they’re going to hook up again?” Warren asked when he thought Linda and Karla were out of earshot.
“It’s not our business, and I shouldn’t have told you,” Brittany said as she collected her chemicals from the storeroom. Warren had most of the basic supplies out, but he’d missed a few ingredients. Brittany’s long blue dress swished as she walked, and her boyfriend couldn’t help but stare at her ass as she passed. He was still in awe of her, and how lucky he was to have her.
“I didn’t mean anything by it. It just sucks that she gets to go over to Linda’s, but we don’t,” Warren said calmly as he meticulously measured the right amount of hydrochloric acid into a flask.
Brittany thought about tossing a pencil at him but thought better of it. She didn’t want to violate lab procedures and protocols; she was a stickler for lab rules. “What, am I not enough for you?” she chirped. She wasn’t serious. They’d already agreed that they could screw anyone in the club they wanted. While it wasn’t exactly an open relationship, they still chose to be with each other most of the time.
“You’re more than enough, but you know you want a party, too.” Warren spoke but didn’t look up. He was busy skillfully attaching his condensers over the boiling solution sitting above the Bunsen burner. He wanted to make sure he got it right, otherwise the results for him and everyone else could be dangerous. They were already inhaling an unstable chemical reaction caused by combining two very different chemistry experiments. While the two top students had refined the formulas as best they could, any slight slip-up could render their work garbage or, worse, deadly.
“God, I do want a party!” Brittany finally exploded as she left her solution to reduce. “It’s just the raw ... you know ... wildness of it all. It makes me feel so alive.”
Warren chuckled. He did know. He thought back to the last time they were at Linda’s, and he got to be in the teacher’s bedroom. He was locked in with his girlfriend’s best friend Karla, arguably THE hottest girl in school and the surprisingly nimble tech-girl, Andrea. He sort of wished it had been Brittany, as had been the plan, but in no world short of winning the lottery did he think he’d ever have two girls at the same time.
“If it does materialize...” Warren started to ask, pausing to check the temperature. “ ... what would you like to have happen?”
Brittany gave her pink solution a stir and thought about her answer. Any other guy would feel threatened with the thought of his girlfriend having sex with other men, but Warren openly asked about it. He wasn’t outwardly confident in most ways, likely due to years of bullying, but Brittany could see he was certain of who he was. Most of all, he trusted her ... and she him. That’s more than she could say of her ex.
“I don’t know. I mean, it’s not like we can control anything while it’s happening, but...” she paused.
“What?” asked Warren, looking up from behind tubes of glass.
“Well, I kind of want to try two guys at the same time.” Saying it out loud made Brittany blush. It seemed so nasty, but it looked like fun. If the tiny Maggie could take it from Darius and Miguel for her first time, then Brittany could handle the same. She’d already tried anal with Warren, giving him the honor of her final cherry.
Her comment got Warren’s attention as his head poked up above the mad scientist style set-up to look at his girlfriend to see if she was serious. By the redness of her face, she certainly seemed to be. The thought of Brittany stuffed between two guys made the front of his jeans tighten.
Warren asked, “Is it bad that I want to see that?”
His question surprised her, “Really? You’d like to see me screwing two guys at the same time, even if one, isn’t you?”
Warren shrugged, “Fair’s fair. I had a threesome last time; you should get yours too. As you said, though, we won’t be able to control what happens. So, even if it does, I might not get the chance to watch.”
“You are so strange,” was Brittany’s response. “I never thought I’d say I’m lucky to have you,” giggling as she spoke.
It made Warren chuckle about how absurd their whole conversation was. “Right back at you, you blonde lab rat.”
A brief silence fell over the lab, as both students rechecked their experiments and equipment. Brittany did have something she wanted to ask Warren, something she’d been thinking about since the meeting at lunch. It seemed a little awkward, but they had both been bantering in a teasing way, so it seemed like a good time.
“Warren, do you ... have you felt the dullness Linda was talking about earlier?”
“What?” Warren asked, his attention fully returning to Brittany. “What do you mean?”
The blonde squirmed uncomfortably on her lab stool, her fingers twisting and pulling on each other. “Well, the times when we don’t use ... it just feels off, like I’m partially asleep or something.”
“Really? What happens?” Warren’s concern was growing, but not for his own performance.
“I don’t know ... it’s difficult to describe. It’s like being touched with mittens or something ... just a dullness or muffled sensations. Have you gotten that?” Brittany asked.
“A little. I just thought it was because we’d been having so much sex that it just gets desensitized; you know, makes you last longer. I’m new to this whole thing...” replied Warren. “Why didn’t you say anything at the meeting?”
“I wasn’t sure, then, but I’ve been thinking about it since lunch. Should we tell Linda?” Brittany was feeling a little worried. The two of them had been using more than anyone else, so if there were any problems, they’d likely feel it first.
“Probably. We’ll mention it tomorrow or as soon as we can find her alone. I’m sure it’s nothing; besides, do you want to stop taking it?” Warren asked, raising his eyebrow.
Brittany shook her head, “No, I like it. We’ll just be careful, that’s all.”
“Exactly. We’re smart. We’ll keep things under control.”
Brittany dug through her schoolbag and pulled out a small vial with a stopper. As she went to pour the pink solution in, she realized it wouldn’t fit.
“Shit!” Brittany swore.
“What’s wrong?”
“I brought the wrong sized vial! I thought we were only making enough to fill the canisters, not extra, so I brought the small one. I’ve got a bigger one in my car. Keep an eye on my station while I run and get it.”
Brittany grabbed her coat from a nearby chair and fished her car keys from her purse. Warren stood up, though, and stopped her.
“I’ll get it. I’m kind of thirsty anyway, so I’ll get something on the way back from the parking lot.”
“You don’t have to...” protested Brittany, but Warren wouldn’t hear of it.
“Let me, m’lady. It’s in the trunk, right? Want anything from the machine?”
“A Coke?” she replied, smiling sweetly and fluttering her eyelashes exaggeratingly.
“No problem.” Warren reached for her keys with one hand and laid a kiss on her lips as he passed. “Mine’s done already, so we can clean up when I get back.”
With that, Warren walked out the door...
“ ... I waited for him to come back for ten minutes, then got bored and started putting things away. Once that was done, I tried texting him, but he’d left his phone on the desk...” Brittany wept as she sat in the emergency wing at the hospital talking to Karla. The others who’d been at the school were gathered close by in the waiting area.
Linda ran past the sliding doors, running full sprint to the gathered group. She’d been informed by Andrea, who sent out an alert in the group chat.
“What the hell happened?” the young teacher asked when she reached the group of them sitting around looking sullen.
Darius was first to speak, “We don’t know. I’d just finished practice and met up with Miguel, Karla, and Andrea. Next thing we know, Warren stumbles in all bloody and collapses on the floor.”
Miguel spoke next, “I brought him in my truck, and Brittany drove the rest here.”
“I called Warren’s Mom; she’s in there with him now,” Andrea added.
“That’s good. Quick thinking, Miguel. You too, Andrea,” said Linda, putting her hand on the distraught Brittany. “Any idea who did this?”
“I checked the cameras, and all I could see was Warren going out the doors to the parking lot,” said the tech-savvy Andrea. “Then we see him stumbling inside twelve minutes later, heading for the drama room.”
“I think it’s pretty obvious who did it,” Darius said, standing up. “It had to be Chuck and his guys. There’s no way it was anyone else.”
“He’s right,” added Miguel. “He’s been gunning for him since...”
“ ... since me,” Brittany said weakly. “This is all my fault. I left the larger vial in the car, and he went to get it. It’s all my fault.”
“It isn’t!” Darius’ voice grew dark. “It’s Chuck’s fault. I warned him what would happen if he messed with Warren again.”
Linda stepped towards the towering young man, trying to calm him. “We don’t know that yet, and we can’t do anything right now. I called Principal Polaski on the way here, she’s going to investigate, and the Sheriff’s sending a couple of deputies to talk to Warren when he’s able. Until then, don’t do anything rash, OK?”
“There’s nothing they can do.” Andrea said coldly, her laptop open on a nearby chair. “I checked it all myself. There’s no footage - there’s no proof. Even if Warren identifies them, they’ll just lie and make up an alibi. It’ll be Warren’s word against theirs.”
“That’s why we gotta hit back!” said an angry Darius. His sudden outburst spooked some of the nearby nurses. He noticed and knew security might show up. He tried to calm down. “Sorry. I just - I let this go on too long. I watched Chuck bully people and did nothing...”
“We all did, Darius. Not just you, the whole school,” Miguel said, full of regret. “I can’t count how many times Chuck would talk about beating on Warren during practices, and we’d all laugh. Just ‘cause I didn’t know Warren then, doesn’t make it alright.”
“Then what about me?” Brittany suddenly said, all eyes fell on her. “I was Chuck’s girlfriend, and I was so focused on school or whatever, I was clueless he was even doing this to people. He could be rude sometimes, but that’s all I saw. Then I find out he’s been beating and harassing Warren for years. I’ve only gotten a taste of what Warren’s been going through these past few weeks. I couldn’t take that, like Warren did for almost three years.”
Karla added, “We’re lucky he didn’t snap and ... well, shoot up the school. I know I didn’t get along with him before, and I still don’t understand your relationship with him, Britt, but he didn’t deserve this.
“Let’s not get discouraged.” Linda was trying to keep their spirits up, but also keep them out of trouble. “Let’s first hope Warren will be ok, then we’ll move on from there. Don’t do anything stupid and rash. You’re all smarter than that, right? Andrea, I’m looking at you.”
“What? I haven’t done anything,” the frizzy haired girl protested, but Linda wasn’t buying it. “OK, fine. I may have been inquiring about selling Chuck’s organs, but it’s for a good cause, people need ... fresh ... organs...”
“Exactly my point. And you boys,” Linda said, pointing to Miguel and Darius, “You lay a hand on Chuck, and you can kiss your scholarship potential goodbye. Let’s cool off before we go half-cocked. Let’s wait to talk with Warren.”
Linda was trying to be mature, but even she was burning with rage at that moment. She knew it had to be Chuck Rodgers, but there was just nothing she could do about it. The main thing she needed was to keep everyone together and calm; let the school and police handle it. If that didn’t work ... then they’d figure it out as a group.
Quinn appeared with Maggie in tow, and both looked like they ran from the parking lot. Their faces were red and were breathing hard. The group brought them up to speed, and they all sat down to wait for word from the doctors.
“I wish we could go in there,” said Brittany, in between sobs.
“It’s family only, you know that,” Karla replied with her arm around her friend’s shoulder. “We’ll get some word soon. I’m sure he’s going to be fine.”
A few minutes later, Miguel smacked Darius in the arm, nodding towards the sliding front doors. The group of eight all turned to see two deputies walking through the emergency entrance and headed to the front desk.
“Here we go,” Darius said, sitting up in his chair. He wasn’t sure if they were there to talk to Warren or because of his outburst.
