Chapter 14
It was a warm Friday evening in Tokyo, and James and Hana were strolling through the neon-lit streets of Shinjuku after dinner. The air buzzed with life. There were couples walking hand in hand, businessmen unwinding after a long week, the occasional call of a street vendor selling takoyaki, and much more. Hana walked beside him, her hands tucked behind her back, a mischievous glint in her eyes.
“You are always so serious, James-sensei,” she teased, tilting her head to look at him. “You work hard, study culture, learn the language ... but have you really experienced Japan yet?”
James chuckled. “I think I’m getting there. I’ve seen temples and gardens, eaten just about everything in sight, and even survived rush hour on the Yamanote Line. What more do I need?”
Hana stopped walking and tapped a finger against her lips, pretending to think. Then, with a playful smile, she leaned in just slightly. “Mmm ... there are still some unique experiences you haven’t tried.”
James raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Like what?”
She giggled and gave him a sidelong glance. “Well ... I could show you something special. A very Japanese tradition. Something fun. Luxurious. Relaxing.”
James grinned. “That’s pretty vague. You’re not trying to get me into trouble, are you?”
Hana gasped in mock innocence, placing a hand on her chest. “Me? Trouble? Never!” Then, laughing, she tugged gently on his sleeve, pulling him closer. “It’s a place. A very interesting place. I think you’d like it.”
James narrowed his eyes playfully. “Are you going to tell me where, or do I just follow you blindly?”
She pouted. “James-sensei, you don’t trust me?”
“I trust you,” he said slowly, “but I also know when someone’s being cryptic.”
Hana grinned and leaned in just enough for her perfume to brush his senses. “Fine, fine. I’ll tell you. It’s a hotel.”
James frowned. “A hotel? But I have an apartment.”
She clicked her tongue. “Not just any hotel. A love hotel.”
He blinked, uncertain if he had heard her correctly. “A ... what?”
Hana giggled. “A love hotel. They’re very famous in Japan. You can rent a room for a few hours or all night. They are private, very luxurious ... and perfect for...” She trailed off, her smile playful as she let him fill in the blanks.
James felt his face flush with heat. “Wait ... what are you saying?”
