Chapter 13

After most of the other teachers had left for the night, James sat once again in the teacher’s lounge, stirring his coffee absentmindedly. He had been in Japan for only a short time, but the cultural whirlwind had already left him feeling both exhilarated and slightly off-balance. Across the room, Kaori, the calligraphy teacher, quietly observed him. Her large, beautiful eyes studied his expressions, as if assessing his mood before deciding to approach.

“You seem deep in thought, James-san,” she said finally, setting down her cup of tea as she stood across the table from him. “Do you mind if I sit with you?”

A little surprised – but pleasantly so – James smile broadly and nodded.

Kaori took the seat across from him. She took a sip of her hot green tea before saying anything more. James saw both concern and a calculating evaluation before she spoke again. “Are you adjusting well to life here?”

James thought about that for a while, reflecting on his recent thoughts about exactly how mixed up he was about himself since he had come to Japan. The he looked up, snapping out of his daze with a small, sheepish smile. “Oh! Uh, yes, for the most part. It’s been an incredible experience so far. Tokyo is even more vibrant than I imagined, and the people have been very kind. But I guess ... I still feel like an outsider trying to make sense of everything.”

Kaori nodded thoughtfully. “That is natural. It takes time to settle in, to understand the rhythm of a new culture. But tell me, what have you found the most surprising?”

James leaned back in his chair, considering. “Well, the students are very disciplined – at least compared to what I was used to back home. But outside of class, it’s a different story. Some of them are really eager to talk to me, especially the girls. It’s flattering, but also kind of confusing. And then there’s Jake...”

Kaori raised an eyebrow. “Jake?”

James hesitated for a moment, then let out a small chuckle. “Yeah. It seems he’s been teaching in Japan and a few other countries for a while, and let’s just say he has strong opinions.”

Kaori took a slow sip of her tea before setting the cup down, her gaze steady. “What kind of opinions particularly bother you?”

James sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. It was interesting that she had read him so easily as to know that Jake’s opinions ‘bothered’ him.

“He told me that a lot of Japanese girls are just looking for foreign men, that they see us as a way to escape their restrictive lives here. He made it sound like they’re all ... well, easy. And honestly, I don’t know what to think. Some of the girls do seem overly friendly, but I’d hate to assume that’s the reason why.”

Kaori pursed her lips, tapping a delicate finger against the rim of her cup. “Ah. So Jake-san has already introduced you to his ... perspective.”

James raised an eyebrow at her tone. “I take it you’ve heard this before?”

She let out a soft, knowing sigh. “Many times. Jake-san is a vagabond, a man who collects experiences but leaves little behind of real substance. He has indeed taught in different countries and prides himself on knowing how to ‘navigate’ the women in each one. But he does not see people, only opportunities. It is ... unfortunate.”
