Chapter 40
It was bound to happen. Kids grow up. Sometimes faster than we want to acknowledge. The grandkids came over last night. Missy is still working on her comedy routine (she is figuring out the order to tell the jokes) and the grandson was sitting there with an odd look on his face, not paying attention to his phone.
“What’s going on, Buddy?”
He looked up at me and winced. “I want to ask Sarah (a cute friend his age) on a date but I have no clue how dating works.” Looking down at his lap he continued. “I don’t want to look stupid. I really like her.”
I’m not sure what two kids, age 13, will do on a date, so I asked him to tell me more.
“We got invited to a birthday party for (another friend who is turning 14). It’s on Saturday. Mom is going to drive me to get Sarah and then we go to the party.”
Sweetie smiled and asked if he wanted feedback on what a girl (or a woman) thought was important for a young man to know, when going on a date. He said ‘yes’ and this small list came about. If anyone reading this is a parent or grandparent and wants to add, please feel free to do so. A lot will make sense, no matter what your relationship status is, from First Date, to something more involved.
Dating Habits That Are Good To Know:
1: Going to the door when picking someone up. (Maybe even wait inside with the parents for her.)
2: Dress well for the date. Clean clothes without rips or holes is a good start. (No stuid ball cap backwards!)
3: Bring flowers or some small token of affection on a first date. (Okay, he isn’t old enough to bring a bottle of wine, maybe her favorite drink?)
4: there is going to be dancing, don’t end up grinding on her like a dog in heat. Learn to dance for real! (Ask a parent/grandparent to teach you.)
5: If you plan to ask her out for a DATE, call it that, not “hanging out” or something like that. (This lets her know that you are serious about getting to know her better.)
