Chapter 33
Earlier this week, last Sunday, to be exact, the parents of my daughter in law were having a Father’s Day get together at their house. The grill was fired up and the pool was getting a workout. The grandson, age 13, had a few quiet words with his mother that I didn’t hear. Dejected, he came over to where the men were gathered around the grill, enjoying the afternoon and laughing together.
“Dad?” the boy asked. “How old do I have to be before mom will let me stay out late with friends”
Looking over at me and his father-in-law, my son grinned. “Buddy, I’m a grown ass man and I STILL need to ask your mom if I can stay out late!”
Make no mistake, my friends. The language that we speak is evolving. (Some might argue that it is Devolving!) I listen to my grandkids and their friends talking and I notice some words that seem to have become prevalent in conversation and at first, they confused me. Four words in particular pop up on a regular basis. So for those of you (like myself) who are unsure or confused, I will try to explain their meaning. And if some of you want to add to this list, by all means, PLEASE do so.
The first word is RIZZ. Meaning: Style, Charm, or Attractiveness. The ability to attract someone. It seems to come from the word ‘charisma’ and has been shortened. Was the word ‘charisma’ taking up too much time and effort with the three syllables?
The next word is SUSS. Meaning: Derived from the word ‘suspicious’ or ‘suspect’ or not totally honest. Now while I can appreciate efficiency, shortening words isn’t always a good thing. But what do I know? Curmudgeons like myself always view change with a ‘suss’ mind.
