Chapter 20
Casting Calls:
Harrison Ford wasn’t the first choice for the character Indiana Jones. George Lucas originally didn’t want to cast him in the role because they had already worked together on Star Wars. It was only after Tom Selleck had to drop out due to schedule conflicts that Harrison got the hat and whip.
Sandra Bullock took a massive pay reduction to help fund the move The Blind Side, because she truly believed in the production. That gamble paid off as the film became a massive success and won her an Academy Award for Best Actress.
Samuel L. Jackson only agreed to play the role of Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) because had already used his likeness for the character in the comics witout his permission. Instead of litigation, he brokered a multi movie deal with Marvel.
Leonardo DiCaprio actually cut his hand (by accident) on a shard of glass during the dinner scene in the movie Django Unchained. Instead of stopping, he stayed in character and used his own blood as a prop, leading to one of the most intense scenes in the movie.
The role of Forest Gump was first offered to John Travolta. He turned it down to appear in Pulp Fiction. The part went to Tom Hanks, and the role became one of the most iconic performances in Hollywood history.
Will Smith was the first candidate for Neo (the Matrix), but he passed it up, saying that the role and movie was too confusing. The movie made Keanu Reeves a Sci-Fi icon.
Bruce Willing was initially cast as Sam Wheat in the movie Ghost. However, he had to leave the role and Patrick Swayze was cast and his on screen chemistry with Demi Moore became unforgettable.
