Chapter 2
The Manhole Cover In Space.
On August 27, 1957, a few months prior to the Soviet Union sending Sputnik into orbit around planet Earth, the United States accidentally launched a chunk of steel into space.
During the “Pascal-B” underground nuclear tests, scientists placed a small nuclear device at the bottom of a 500 foot deep hollow shaft. To cap it off, they welded a giant, 2000 pound solid steel plate over the top of the shaft.
When the nuke detonated, it vaporized the concrete and steel at the bottom of the shaft that created a massive gas bubble that had no place to go but up the 500 foot shaft. Sort of like the barrel of the largest gun ever fired!
