The next morning Zoe manages to catch Mistress Heather alone and Zoe asks her why her earnings from last night didn’t amount to much. Mistress looks at Zoe as though she should be grateful for the pitiful amount she has earned.
“Firstly, the takings last night barely covered the cost of hiring the rink,” replies Mistress. “Then there are the deductions made for the mistakes in your performance. I expect perfection, and anything less than that is subject to a deduction in your earnings. You are lucky that you ranked highly last night or you could have ended up owing me money.”
Zoe is shocked by this revelation, and she instantly regrets not reading the contract properly before she signed it. As the troupe resumes its journey, Zoe makes up for that omission.
“Are you hoping to find a loophole in your contract?” asks Lina as she and Zoe sit side by side on the bus. “I can save you the trouble ... there are no loopholes that favour you. Mistress owns you body and soul for as long as she wants you in the show.”
“Then why did you sign up?” asks Zoe, having read enough of the contract to know that Lina is correct in what she says. Like Zoe, Lina is a new recruit on this tour.
“My work visa came up for renewal and I could only renew it and stay in the country if I had a job. My only skills involve ice skating, but suitable jobs are few and far between. For all its faults, this tour was the best option open to me, so I signed up for the tour.”
“So how are we expected to manage if Mistress can make so many different deductions from our earnings?”
“My advice is that you learn the art of total submission,” says Mira sat facing Zoe and Lina across the table, and overhearing their conversation. “Don’t try following Roxy’s example. She tries to resist every step of the way, and she suffers the consequences. She is probably deeply in debt to Mistress by now. It’s probably why she cannot afford to leave.”
Zoe is about to ask why Roxy, or any of the others, don’t simply leave. However, she suddenly notices the clause in the contract specifying the size of the early termination fee a skater must pay if she wishes to quit mid-tour. There’s no way Zoe could afford that huge sum, and she suspects the others are in the same situation. She’s trapped for the duration of the tour, and she has only herself to blame.
Zoe scans through the long list of things that she can be fined for doing or not doing. A trivial misdemeanour attracts a small fixed fine, but other wrongdoings, like missing practise, or providing a sub-standard performance, carry more substantial penalties. Zoe begins to understand why Lina was so upset at her fall during the performance last night. Zoe examines the slip of paper detailing her earning from last night. Nearly half her income was forfeit due to fines and penalties. Even so, her earnings should have been higher. The contracts say that forty percent of a show’s takings after expenses are shared between the skaters taking part. Mistress said that the takings from last night’s performance barely covered the hire of the rink. Zoe cannot believe that to be true. There were sixty spectators last night. Even allowing for the usual complimentary free entry for special guests, the takings must have run into a couple of thousand. A short-term hire of a run down rink like that can’t come to more than a few hundred, so why did Zoe receive such a pitiful amount? Zoe wonders whether Mistress Heather is cheating the skaters of money. However, challenging Mistress Heather without proof will only get Zoe into deep trouble.
“How are we expected to make ends meet if we get paid so little?” Zoe asks Mira.
“Unless you want to earn more by spreading your legs, then I suggest you learn to make do with what you’re given.”
