The timing of the group’s arrival in the shelter couldn’t have been worse. Whatever illegal activity goes on in the shelter at night has finally worn out the patience of the police. Flashing blue lights and wailing sirens circle the shelter in seconds. Even so, most of the denizens escape before the police can close their cordon. Only three of the regulars are arrested, all of them so spaced out from whatever they’ve taken to understand what is happening.
Unfortunately the six skaters are rounded up as well. Initially they are invited to go to the police station as witnesses. Roxy objects and lets loose a barrage of invectives that ends with her being arrested for disturbing the peace. Since the others don’t want to be separated from Roxy, they agree to go to the police station to give statements.
Once at the station, the charges against Roxy are quietly dropped once the police understand the group are ice skaters who have been performing at the rink tonight. The officer in charge checks through each of their statements and seems satisfied that none of them were involved in anything illegal at the shelter. As the group head out of the station, one of the police officers recognises Zoe as the skater who performed the erotic finale to the show. At first Zoe thinks he’s just an admirer, but it turns out he’s some moralistic prig who promptly detains Zoe for questioning about performing indecent acts in a public place.
Despite the protests of the other skaters, Zoe is separated from them and taken to a holding cell. Zoe is unsure what charges the police can lay that will be accepted in court. The show was advertised as ‘adults only’, so those attending should have been aware of the nature of the show. Unfortunately, the officer is determined to make an example of Zoe.
“Am I under arrest?” asks Zoe. “If so, I require my lawyer to be present before you question me.”
The officer is momentarily thrown by Zoe’s knowledge of the law. Most young people who offend his personal moral code are too intimidated to demand their legal rights.
“Um. No. No. You are just helping the police with their inquiries,” says the officer, putting his notebook aside. “I see from the statement you have just signed that you are called Zoe and are currently living with, and working for, the Heather Hopkins Ice Show.”
“Yes,” replies Zoe.
“I’ll need the name and address of your next of kin, and your previous residential address for the record. We need to check your background and any police record on file.”
“Why?” asks Zoe.
“Surely it isn’t a secret unless you have something to hide,” smirks the officer.
Zoe feels trapped. If Zoe’s parents hear that she is under police investigation then Zoe can kiss goodbye to her independence. While she doesn’t doubt that her parents can bail her out of any trouble with the law, it will come at a huge personal cost to Zoe. Any time and money her parents spend rescuing Zoe from trouble will be considered a debt that Zoe can only repay by submitting to their demands.
“My next of kin is Brigitte du Frêsne,” lies Zoe.
Zoe provides Madame du Frêsne’s address which she had previously noticed was engraved on a small ‘property of... ‘ plaque on the leather bondage collar that’s still locked around her throat. She’s surprised that the police officer hasn’t made an issue of her collar by now.
