Chapter 6: The Right Way

The bridge was quiet in the aftermath of the Lumen’s judgment. Not silent — the hum of the engines, the soft beeping of consoles, the faint crackle of damaged wiring still filled the air — but the frantic tension that had gripped the ship was gone.

The Helix soldiers sat on the floor, disarmed and stunned, their weapons scattered in harmless pieces. Some stared at the Threshold through the observation window, their expressions shifting from fear to awe. Others simply breathed, shaken by the realization that their mission had been rendered meaningless by something far beyond their understanding.

Jalen holstered his weapon and stepped toward Rafe. “So ... this is it.”

Rafe nodded slowly. “This is the moment the Lumen were waiting for.”

Tessa looked between them. “The Threshold is stable. More stable than last time. It’s ... inviting us.”

Rafe felt the resonance inside him respond — warm, steady, almost like a hand on his shoulder. “It’s not just inviting us. It’s waiting for us.”

Mara’s voice came through the comms, calmer now. “Engineering is stable. Whatever the Lumen did, it reinforced half our failing systems. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

Jalen exhaled. “They’re giving us a path.”

Rafe turned to the crew — the people who had stood with him through fear, uncertainty, and the unknown.

“Mara,” he said, “bring the engines online.”

“Already warming,” she replied.

“Tessa,” Rafe continued, “plot a course into the Threshold. Slow approach. No force.”

Tessa nodded, fingers moving across her console. “Course set.”

Jalen raised an eyebrow. “You’re giving orders now?”

Rafe hesitated. “Sorry. Habit.”

Jalen shook his head with a faint smile. “No. You’re right. You understand this better than any of us. Take the lead.”

Rafe swallowed, humbled. “Thank you.”

The ship vibrated as the engines came fully online. The Ardent turned slowly, its nose aligning with the swirling aperture of the Threshold. The colors shifted in response — blues deepening, golds brightening, the entire structure pulsing like a living organism.

The Helix commander stood shakily. “You’re ... you’re going in?”

Rafe met his eyes. “Yes.”

The commander looked at the Threshold, then back at Rafe. “You don’t know what’s on the other side.”

Rafe nodded. “That’s why we’re going.”

The commander swallowed. “And what about us?”

Rafe considered him for a long moment. “You came here with fear. But you’re still human. And this is a human journey.”
