Chapter 5: Judgment
The bridge lights flickered as the ship shuddered again — this time not from weapons fire, but from something deeper, something resonant. The Threshold outside pulsed in slow, rhythmic waves, each one sending a faint tremor through the Ardent’s hull.
Tessa checked her console. “Rafe ... the gravimetric field around the Threshold is intensifying. It’s synchronizing with the ship.”
Jalen frowned. “Synchronizing? With us?”
Rafe didn’t answer. He didn’t need to. The resonance inside him was growing stronger, matching the pulse of the Threshold like two heartbeats aligning.
Mara’s voice burst through the comms, breathless. “They’re almost at the bridge! I’ve sealed everything I can, but they’re cutting through the final bulkhead.”
Jalen turned to Rafe. “We need to prepare for a fight.”
Rafe shook his head. “No. We need to prepare for a choice.”
The Threshold pulsed again — brighter, deeper, more deliberate.
Tessa swallowed. “Rafe ... what’s happening?”
Rafe stepped toward the observation window. The swirling aurora stretched across the sky, its colors shifting in patterns that felt almost ... intentional.
“The Lumen is watching,” he said softly. “They’re waiting to see what humanity does next.”
Jalen joined him at the window. “And what do they expect?”
Rafe exhaled. “Unity.”
A metallic clang echoed through the corridor outside the bridge — the unmistakable sound of a plasma cutter finishing its work.
Tessa flinched. “They’re through.”
Jalen drew his sidearm. “Positions!”
Rafe raised a hand. “No weapons.”
Jalen stared at him. “Rafe, they’re armed. They’re desperate. They’ll kill us.”
Rafe turned to him, calm and steady. “If we meet fear with fear, the Threshold closes. That’s the test.”
The bulkhead door glowed red-hot, then burst inward with a shower of sparks. Smoke billowed into the bridge as the Helix strike team stormed through, rifles raised.
“Hands up!” the commander barked. “Everyone down!”
Jalen stepped forward, weapon lowered but ready. “This is a scientific vessel. You’re violating—”
“Shut up,” the commander snapped. “We’re taking Calder. Move aside.”
Tessa’s voice trembled. “You don’t understand what you’re doing.”
The commander aimed his rifle at her. “I understand perfectly. He opens the Threshold, or we force him to.”
Rafe stepped forward. “You can’t force it. The Lumen won’t respond to violence.”
The commander sneered. “Everything responds to violence.”
