Chapter 4: The Broadcast
For a moment, no one on the bridge spoke.
The Threshold shimmered across the darkness like a living aurora, its colors rippling in slow, deliberate waves. It wasn’t just light — it was presence. It felt aware. Watching. Waiting.
Earth’s surface glittered beneath it, cities glowing like constellations. Millions of people were staring up at the same impossible sight.
Tessa broke the silence first. “Rafe ... every comm channel on Earth just lit up. Governments, news networks, private feeds — they’re all broadcasting the Threshold.”
Jalen leaned forward, eyes fixed on the swirling light. “They’re terrified.”
Rafe shook his head. “No. They’re uncertain. There’s a difference.”
The ship shuddered again as the Helix boarding teams regrouped deeper in the Ardent. Mara’s voice crackled over the comms, breathless and strained.
“They’re pushing toward the central spine. I’ve sealed every bulkhead I can, but they’re cutting through faster than expected.”
Jalen cursed under his breath. “We don’t have time for this.”
Rafe stepped toward the main console. “Then we make time.”
Tessa turned to him. “What are you planning?”
Rafe stared at the Threshold — at the swirling, luminous veil that stretched across the sky. The resonance inside him pulsed in rhythm with it, like a shared heartbeat.
“They’re fighting over control,” he said quietly. “Over who gets to decide what the Threshold means. But the Lumen didn’t choose a government. They didn’t choose a corporation. They chose us.”
Jalen frowned. “Us?”
Rafe nodded. “The Ardent. The crew. The people who reached out with curiosity instead of fear.”
Tessa swallowed. “So what do we do?”
Rafe placed his hand on the console. “We speak.”
Jalen blinked. “Speak? To who?”
Rafe looked at him. “Everyone.”
Tessa’s eyes widened. “Rafe ... you want to broadcast to the entire planet?”
“Yes.”
Jalen hesitated. “You’ll be overriding military channels. Government channels. You’ll be stepping into the middle of a geopolitical firestorm.”
Rafe didn’t flinch. “The Lumen said intention matters. If humanity chooses fear, the Threshold closes forever. If we choose unity, it opens. Right now, Earth is choosing fear because no one is telling them the truth.”
Tessa’s voice softened. “So you will.”
Rafe nodded once.
Jalen exhaled slowly. “Alright. Tessa — patch him through.”
Tessa’s fingers flew across the controls. “Routing all major channels. Civilian, military, corporate, emergency networks. You’ll be live to ... well ... everyone.”
Rafe stepped into the center of the bridge. The lights dimmed slightly as the broadcast system activated. A soft tone signaled the connection.
Tessa whispered, “You’re on.”
Rafe inhaled deeply.
Then he spoke.
