Chapter 3: The Sky That Tore Open

The bridge of the Ardent was a storm of motion when Rafe and Tessa arrived. Screens flickered with incoming alerts. Tactical overlays pulsed red. The ship’s AI repeated warnings in a calm voice that only made the chaos feel sharper.

“Multiple unauthorized launches detected from Earth,” Jalen said without looking up. “Ballistic trajectories. Orbital drones. Some military, some ... not.”

Rafe stepped beside him. “Helix Dynamics?”

“Helix. Aegis. Two national militaries. And at least one private contractor we can’t identify.” Jalen finally turned, eyes hard. “Whatever you did down there, it woke everyone up.”

Rafe didn’t answer. He didn’t need to. The Lumen’s warning still echoed inside him.

Divergence.

Knowledge opens. Fear closes.

Earth was choosing fear.

Tessa slid into her station, fingers flying across the controls. “We’re being hailed by four different governments. All demanding access to Rafe. All claiming jurisdiction.”

Jalen scoffed. “They can get in line.”

The ship shuddered as another impact reverberated through the hull.

Mara’s voice crackled over the comms. “Docking ring C is sealed, but they’re trying to cut through the inner bulkhead now. I can hold them off for maybe five minutes.”

Rafe felt the resonance pulse faintly in his chest, like a warning tremor. “They won’t stop. Not until they get what they want.”

“And what they want,” Jalen said, “is you.”

Rafe stared at the tactical display. Icons representing Earth’s orbital assets were shifting, repositioning, locking onto the Ardent. The ship was being surrounded.

Tessa’s voice tightened. “They’re preparing to board from multiple vectors.”

Jalen slammed a hand on the console. “We’re not letting them take this ship.”

Rafe stepped forward. “They’re not after the ship. They’re after the Threshold.”

Jalen turned sharply. “The Threshold isn’t even open.”

Rafe met his eyes. “Not yet.”

The bridge fell silent.

Tessa swallowed. “Rafe ... what are you saying?”

Rafe exhaled slowly. “The Lumen came to me. They warned me Earth is approaching a divergence point. If humanity chooses fear, the Threshold closes forever. If we choose unity—”

Jalen cut him off. “Unity? Look at the screen, Rafe. Does this look like unity?”

Rafe didn’t flinch. “That’s why we need to act before they do.”

The ship jolted again—harder this time. Sparks rained from an overhead conduit.

Mara’s voice came through, strained. “They’ve breached the inner bulkhead. I’m sealing the next corridor, but they’re cutting through faster than I can compensate.”
