Chapter 2: The Strike
The alarm didn’t sound like a normal alert. It wasn’t the sharp, piercing tone of a hull breach or the rising wail of a reactor fault. This one was deeper—almost a growl—vibrating through the Ardent’s frame like a warning from the ship itself.
Rafe snapped out of his thoughts as the deck lights shifted to amber.
INTRUSION DETECTED — DOCKING RING C
The words flashed across the observation deck display.
Rafe’s pulse kicked. “No ... not now.”
He sprinted toward the lift, boots pounding against the metal floor. The doors slid open just as Mara’s voice crackled over the comms.
“Rafe, where are you? We’ve got unauthorized contact on the ring. They’re cutting through the outer seal.”
“I’m on my way,” he said, stepping into the lift. “Who is it?”
“Helix Dynamics,” Mara replied, her voice tight. “Their transponder codes are masked, but the signature is theirs. They’re not even trying to hide it.”
Rafe clenched his jaw. Helix had been circling the Threshold discovery like vultures since the moment Earth received the first transmission. They wanted the Lumen’s technology. They wanted control. And they were willing to break every treaty to get it.
The lift doors opened to chaos.
Crew members rushed through the corridor, sealing bulkheads and rerouting power. The ship shuddered as something heavy clamped onto the docking ring.
Tessa appeared from a side corridor, tablet in hand. “They’re forcing a hard-dock. We tried to jam the clamps, but they’re overriding us.”
“How many?” Rafe asked.
“Two teams. Maybe twelve total. Armed.”
Rafe exhaled sharply. “Of course they are.”
The ship lurched again—this time with a metallic screech that echoed through the hull.
Tessa grimaced. “They’ve breached the outer seal.”
Rafe didn’t hesitate. “We need to slow them down. Buy time.”
Mara’s voice came through the comms again. “Already on it. I’m cycling gravity in the ring. They’ll have to fight their own boots to stay upright.”
Rafe allowed himself a brief, grim smile. “Good.”
He reached the inner airlock just as the first tremor hit—an unmistakable thud of boots landing on metal. The attackers were inside.
Tessa pulled him behind a support beam. “We can’t take them head on. They’re too well equipped.”
Rafe nodded. “We’re not fighting them. We’re delaying them.”
The corridor lights flickered as Mara rerouted power. The artificial gravity surged, then dipped, then surged again. Rafe felt his stomach lurch as the floor seemed to tilt beneath him.
Tessa braced herself. “That’ll slow them, but not for long.”
Footsteps echoed down the corridor—heavy, synchronized, disciplined. The kind of movement that came from people who trained for zero gravity combat.
Rafe peeked around the corner.
Black armor. Visors. Pulse rifles. Helix Dynamics’ elite extraction unit.
