Chapter 9: Factions of the Void
The Explorer-01 drifted quietly through the outer edge of the Arkon system.
Planet Arkon glowed far behind them—green continents wrapped in soft cloud bands, slowly rotating beneath the distant sun.
Leo sat alone in the cockpit.
The Aetherblade rested across his lap.
Even inactive, the weapon pulsed with faint blue light.
It felt ... alive.
Not literally alive.
But aware.
Every time he held it, he felt the same strange sensation—like the blade was measuring him.
Judging him.
Leo turned the weapon slowly in his hands.
A transparent interface floated above it.
MYTHIC WEAPON — AETHERBLADE
Damage:???
Abilities Unlocked:
• Aether Strike
• Dimensional Dash
• Energy Phase
Bond Level: 1%
“Bond level?” Leo muttered.
Marcus leaned against the cockpit doorway.
“That sounds ominous.”
Leo looked up.
“Yeah.”
Marcus stepped inside, arms folded.
“Everyone’s talking about it.”
“About what?”
“The weapon.”
Leo sighed.
Of course they were.
Players had seen the fight.
Word spread fast in a game world—especially when PvP hunters were involved.
Marcus pulled up a floating system panel.
It displayed the Cosmic Quest player network.
Hundreds of message threads.
One headline dominated them all.
PLAYER DISCUSSION TRENDING
“MYTHIC WEAPON FOUND IN AETHER VAULT”
Another headline followed.
“RED PHANTOM CONFIRMS PLAYER ‘LEO’ POSSESSES AETHERBLADE”
Leo groaned.
“He told everyone.”
Marcus shrugged.
“He’s a PvP hunter. Chaos benefits him.”
Ava walked into the cockpit next, holding a datapad.
“Chaos is exactly what we’re getting.”
Leo glanced back.
“Bad news?”
Ava nodded.
“Very.”
She projected a star map.
Multiple systems appeared around Arkon.
Each marked with player activity.
Colored symbols covered the map.
“Players are organizing,” Ava said.
“Guilds.”
Marcus frowned.
“That was fast.”
“It gets worse.”
Ava zoomed in.
Three massive guild emblems appeared.
PLAYER FACTIONS
IRON LEGION
NOVA SYNDICATE
STARFALL COLLECTIVE
Leo stared at the map.
“Those look ... big.”
“They are.”
Jin entered the room, wiping grease off his hands.
“Ships too.”
Leo blinked.
“Ships?”
Jin nodded.
“Players are salvaging alien vessels all over the system.”
Marcus whistled quietly.
“So it begins.”
Leo frowned.
“What begins?”
Marcus answered simply.
“War.”
The Hunters
Guide-Bot floated into the cockpit.
Its sensors glowed red.
“Incoming transmissions detected.”
Leo straightened.
“From who?”
Guide-Bot projected three holographic faces.
Unknown players.
Guild leaders.
Marcus studied the first symbol.
Iron armor.
Crossed blades.
“Iron Legion,” he said.
Ava pointed to the second.
A sleek black star symbol.
“Nova Syndicate.”
The third emblem resembled falling stars.
“Starfall Collective.”
Leo rubbed his forehead.
“Let me guess.”
“They want the weapon.”
Marcus smiled slightly.
“Bingo.”
The first message played.
A massive armored man appeared on screen.
His voice was deep and commanding.
“I am Commander Raze, leader of the Iron Legion.”
“We control three planets in the outer sector.”
His eyes locked onto the camera.
“Deliver the Aetherblade to us.”
“In exchange, we will protect your team.”
The message ended.
Jin laughed.
“That sounded friendly.”
Ava rolled her eyes.
“Very.”
The second message activated.
A woman with silver cybernetic eyes appeared.
“I am Nyra Voss, leader of the Nova Syndicate.”
Her voice was calm.
Cold.
“We are willing to purchase the Aetherblade.”
“Credits. Ships. Territory.”
“Anything you want.”
She leaned closer.
“Refuse ... and you become a target.”
Message ended.
Marcus sighed.
“Charming.”
The final message played.
A young man appeared.
Relaxed.
Almost casual.
“I’m Orion, leader of Starfall Collective.”
He smiled slightly.
“We’re not threatening you.”
“Just letting you know something important.”
Leo leaned forward.
“What?”
Orion’s smile faded.
“The Red Phantom isn’t hunting you alone anymore.”
“Half the sector is.”
The Guild That Hunts
Silence filled the cockpit.
Leo looked at Ava.
“You said there was worse news.”
Ava nodded.
She opened another projection.
A new emblem appeared.
Black.
With a red slash across it.
PLAYER GUILD DETECTED
VOID REAVERS
Marcus frowned.
“Never heard of them.”
“You wouldn’t.”
Ava zoomed the display.
“They formed yesterday.”
“Immediately after the Aetherblade was revealed.”
Jin leaned closer.
“How many members?”
Ava hesitated.
“Thirty-two.”
Leo whistled softly.
“That’s a raid party.”
Marcus corrected him.
“No.”
“That’s an army.”
Guide-Bot interrupted.
“Alert.”
“Multiple ships approaching.”
Everyone froze.
Leo rushed to the cockpit window.
Three ships dropped out of warp ahead of them.
Black hulls.
Red markings.
Jin cursed quietly.
“Void Reavers.”
Marcus grabbed his hammer.
“Already?”
The lead ship opened communication.
A distorted voice echoed through the cockpit.
“Player Leo.”
“We know you possess the Aetherblade.”
“Power down your engines.”
Leo leaned toward the console.
“Or what?”
The voice laughed.
“Or we take it.”
Twenty player signals appeared on the scanner.
Marcus stared at the screen.
“Well.”
“There’s your large-scale PvP.”
Leo exhaled slowly.
“Great.”
The First Fleet Battle
The Void Reavers attacked first.
Missiles launched across the vacuum.
Jin slammed the ship controls.
“Incoming!”
Leo pulled the throttle.
The Explorer-01 dove sideways through space.
Explosions flashed behind them.
Marcus shouted from the cargo bay.
“Can this ship fight?!”
Jin yelled back.
“It can run!”
More ships dropped out of warp.
Eight.
Ten.
Twelve.
Leo stared at the scanner.
“Twenty players.”
Ava grabbed the weapons console.
“Then let’s make it interesting.”
She fired.
The Explorer-01’s plasma cannons lit up.
One enemy fighter exploded.
The battle erupted across the void.
Missiles.
Lasers.
Ships weaving between debris.
Players shouting across voice channels.
The first large-scale PvP battle had begun.
And in the middle of it—
Leo’s team was completely outnumbered.
The Discovery
During the chaos, Guide-Bot suddenly froze.
Its sensors flickered rapidly.
“Anomaly detected.”
Leo glanced back.
“What now?”
Guide-Bot projected a strange signal.
It wasn’t from the ships.
It was coming from deep space.
Or maybe deeper.
A hidden data stream.
Leo frowned.
“What is that?”
Guide-Bot hesitated.
Something it almost never did.
“This signal ... is not part of the Cosmic Quest network.”
Marcus blinked.
“What does that mean?”
Guide-Bot processed the data.
Then spoke slowly.
“Conclusion uncertain.”
“But probability suggests...”
The ship shook as another missile passed.
Guide-Bot finished the sentence.
“ ... Cosmic Quest may not be a simulated game environment.”
Silence filled the cockpit.
Leo stared at the stars outside the window.
“ ... You’re saying this world is real.”
Guide-Bot answered quietly.
“Possibly.”
And suddenly the stakes became much bigger than PvP.
The void erupted into chaos.
Twenty player ships filled the darkness around the Explorer-01, their engines burning bright against the black backdrop of space. Plasma bolts streaked between vessels. Missiles cut silent trails across the vacuum before detonating in bursts of white fire.
Inside the cockpit, warning lights flashed everywhere.
Jin gripped the pilot console with both hands.
“We’ve got twelve fighters on our tail!”
Ava spun the weapons turret controls.
“Then stop flying in straight lines!”
“I’m not!”
The ship jerked sideways as Leo grabbed the throttle and forced the Explorer-01 into a tight spiral.
The maneuver threw everyone slightly against their harnesses.
