Chapter 8: The Aether Vault
Space was supposed to be empty.
Leo had always imagined it that way.
Quiet. Calm. A black ocean sprinkled with distant stars.
But after entering Cosmic Quest, he had learned the truth.
Space wasn’t empty.
It was full of ruins.
The Explorer-01 drifted through a region of space that didn’t appear on any official map. Even the navigation console labeled the area in simple red letters:
UNCHARTED SECTOR
Stars burned cold and distant around them.
The ship’s reactor hummed beneath Leo’s seat, powered by the Power Crystal they had recovered from the Zerath dungeon days earlier. The upgrade had transformed the small starter ship into something far more capable.
Still...
Compared to what floated ahead of them...
The Explorer-01 looked like a toy.
Marcus leaned forward over the back of Leo’s chair.
“Tell me that thing isn’t the dungeon.”
Leo didn’t answer immediately.
Because he wasn’t sure what he was looking at.
At first glance the structure resembled a massive ring orbiting nothing. It rotated slowly through the void, thousands of meters wide, covered in layers of ancient metal plates and alien machinery.
But the longer Leo stared at it, the more details he noticed.
Whole sections had collapsed.
Gigantic fractures ran across the structure like scars.
Ancient towers leaned at impossible angles.
And yet...
Lights still glowed along its surface.
Gold.
Pulsing.
Alive.
Jin spoke quietly from the weapons console.
“That thing shouldn’t still have power.”
Guide-Bot hovered near the cockpit ceiling, scanning the structure with thin beams of blue light.
“Estimated age: twelve thousand years.”
Ava whistled.
“Then something’s been maintaining it.”
Zip sat cross-legged on the dashboard, watching the megastructure spin slowly outside the glass.
“Old alien place feels angry.”
Leo frowned.
“Angry?”
Zip nodded seriously.
“Yes.”
Marcus rubbed his jaw.
“That’s comforting.”
Leo tapped the navigation console.
The quest marker pulsed brighter.
LEGENDARY QUEST ACTIVE
Signal Source: Unknown Megastructure
Designation: AETHER VAULT
Reward: MYTHIC WEAPON
Ava leaned closer.
“You realize legendary quests usually involve bosses that can wipe entire teams.”
Marcus shrugged.
“Then we’ll just not get wiped.”
Leo smirked.
“That’s the plan.”
Guide-Bot interrupted.
“Docking port detected.”
A massive opening in the outer ring slowly rotated toward them.
Ancient docking clamps extended from the walls of the structure.
Almost like the megastructure had been waiting for them.
Leo guided the Explorer-01 inside.
The moment the ship crossed the threshold—
The vault woke up.
Lights ignited across the interior docking chamber.
Ancient machines activated with low mechanical groans.
Marcus muttered:
“ ... Yeah. Definitely not abandoned.”
The ship touched down gently.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Leo stood first.
“Well.”
He grabbed the Crystal Venom Blade from his back.
“Let’s see what twelve thousand years of alien security looks like.”
The Outer Ring
The interior of the Aether Vault felt ... wrong.
Not dangerous.
Not yet.
But wrong.
The architecture alone made Leo uneasy.
The walls weren’t straight. Corridors curved at strange angles, almost organic in shape. The metal floors reflected faint golden light from thin glowing lines embedded beneath the surface.
Alien symbols moved across panels like living code.
Guide-Bot hovered ahead of the group, projecting a soft beam of light down the corridor.
“Energy signal located deeper within structure.”
Jin checked the charge on his plasma rifle.
“How deep?”
“Unknown.”
Marcus cracked his neck.
“Guess we’ll find out.”
They moved cautiously through the vault.
The silence was oppressive.
No wind.
No distant machinery.
Just the sound of their footsteps echoing across ancient metal.
Leo glanced at the walls as they walked.
Some of the alien symbols looked almost mathematical.
Others looked like warning signs.
Zip tapped one glowing panel.
“This one says ‘danger.’”
Marcus sighed.
“Of course it does.”
The corridor opened into a massive circular chamber.
Leo stopped instantly.
The floor was covered in deep scars.
Blast marks.
Impact craters.
Old battle damage.
Ava crouched down to examine one of the craters.
“Something fought here.”
Jin walked to the edge of the room.
“Something big.”
Guide-Bot floated toward the center of the chamber.
Its sensors flashed red.
“Warning.”
Leo felt his pulse spike.
“What is it?”
Guide-Bot spoke calmly.
“Security system detected.”
The floor trembled.
Metal plates shifted.
Something enormous moved beneath them.
Marcus groaned.
“Here we go.”
The chamber floor split open.
And the guardian rose from the darkness.
The Legendary Boss
The machine was colossal.
At least thirty feet tall.
Its body resembled a fusion of alien technology and weapon systems—layered armor plates surrounding a glowing golden core. Six mechanical arms extended outward from its torso, each carrying a different weapon.
Energy cannons.
Blade limbs.
Gravity emitters.
Its head rotated slowly toward the team.
Golden eyes ignited.
Guide-Bot projected a warning across Leo’s vision.
LEGENDARY BOSS DETECTED
Aether Guardian
Level: 25
HP: 5000
Abilities:
• Gravity Pulse
• Energy Cannon Barrage
• Shield Matrix
• Phase Overdrive
Marcus stared at the health bar.
“ ... Five thousand.”
Leo exhaled slowly.
“Okay.”
“That’s a boss.”
The guardian’s voice shook the chamber.
UNAUTHORIZED PRESENCE DETECTED
DEFENSE PROTOCOL INITIATED
The first cannon fired.
Marcus barely dodged the blast.
The beam carved a molten trench across the chamber floor.
Ava was already moving.
She sprinted up a broken support beam and leaped directly onto the machine’s shoulder, daggers flashing.
Leo activated Phantom Step.
His body blurred through space.
The Venom Blade slashed across the guardian’s leg joint.
Poison energy erupted.
HP: 4970 / 5000
The machine didn’t even flinch.
Jin opened fire.
Blue plasma bolts hammered against the boss’s armor.
Marcus charged forward with his hammer raised high.
The weapon slammed into the guardian’s blade arm.
The collision rang like a bell.
Metal against metal.
The boss retaliated instantly.
Gravity energy surged outward.
Guide-Bot shouted:
“GRAVITY PULSE!”
The shockwave exploded through the chamber.
Leo hit the floor hard.
His vision flashed red.
HP: 92 / 160
“Everyone alive?” Marcus shouted.
“Barely,” Ava called from above.
Leo forced himself to stand.
The guardian stepped forward.
Slow.
Unstoppable.
And then—
Guide-Bot froze.
Its sensors flashed.
“Additional player detected.”
Leo’s stomach sank.
He already knew who it was.
A voice echoed through the chamber from above.
Calm.
Amused.
“You really should be more careful where you travel.”
A red visor glowed in the darkness.
The Red Phantom stepped onto a balcony overlooking the battlefield.
Marcus groaned.
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
The Phantom leaned casually against the railing.
“I followed your signal.”
His crimson blade ignited.
“And now I’ll take the reward.”
Leo tightened his grip on the Venom Blade.
The boss roared again.
Energy cannons charging.
Three enemies now.
The guardian.
The dungeon.
And the most dangerous PvP hunter in the game.
Leo exhaled slowly.
“Great.”
Marcus raised his hammer.
“Well...”
Ava spun her daggers.
“Let’s kill a god.”
The Aether Guardian moved first.
It did not roar like a beast or scream like a monster.
Instead it rotated slowly toward the intruders, mechanical limbs unfolding with terrifying precision.
