Chapter 3: The First Boss

The roar that came from inside the Crystal Cave didn’t sound like anything Leo had ever heard before.

It wasn’t just loud.

It was deep.

The kind of roar that made the ground vibrate under your feet and sent a chill down your spine.

Leo slowly took a step back from the cave entrance.

“Okay,” he whispered, “maybe we should rethink this mission.”

Beside him, Zip’s ears flattened.

“I told you something lives there.”

Guide-Bot floated calmly between them.

“Warning: Guardian entity detected.”

Leo pointed at the dark cave.

“Yeah, I figured that part out.”

Inside the cave, something heavy moved.

Stone scraped against stone.

Dust drifted down from the cave ceiling.

Leo’s heart started pounding faster.

“Guide-Bot,” he said carefully, “what exactly is a guardian entity?”

The robot’s green eyes blinked.

“A creature assigned to protect valuable mission objectives.”

Leo groaned.

“So basically ... a boss.”

“Correct.”

A glowing blue screen suddenly appeared in front of him.

BOSS ENCOUNTER DETECTED

Guardian: Stone Titan

Level: 3
Threat Level: Moderate

Reward:
• Power Crystal
• Experience Points
• Possible Loot Drop

Leo stared at the screen.

“Level three?”

He looked down at himself.

“I’m level ... what exactly?”

Another screen popped up.

PLAYER STATUS

Name: Leo Ramirez
Level: 1
Health: 100/100
Energy: 50/50

Skills:
• Quick Thinking (Beginner)

Inventory:
• Empty

Leo raised an eyebrow.

“My inventory is empty?”

Guide-Bot nodded.

“You currently possess no equipment.”

Leo pointed at the cave.

“And you want me to fight that thing?”

Guide-Bot paused.

“Correct.”

Leo looked at Zip.

Zip shrugged.

“Good luck?”

Leo sighed.

“This game is definitely unfair.”

Another deep rumble echoed from inside the cave.

A massive shadow moved closer.

Leo squinted into the darkness.

“Okay ... think.”

Every game had a system.

Enemies had weaknesses.

Bosses had patterns.

There had to be a way to beat this thing.

He looked at Guide-Bot.

“Do I get weapons?”

The robot responded instantly.

“Starter equipment available.”

A small glowing cube appeared in front of Leo.

“Select your starter item.”

The cube unfolded into three floating icons.

STARTER EQUIPMENT

Plasma Dagger

Pulse Blaster

Energy Shield

Leo studied them carefully.

The dagger looked cool, but the boss was huge.

Getting close seemed like a terrible idea.

The shield sounded useful, but it wouldn’t help him actually defeat the boss.

That left the blaster.

Leo pointed.

“Pulse Blaster.”

The cube flashed.

A sleek silver device appeared in Leo’s hand.

It looked like a compact sci-fi pistol with glowing blue lines running along its sides.

Leo grinned.

“Okay ... now we’re talking.”

A new message appeared.

ITEM ACQUIRED

Pulse Blaster
Damage: Medium
Energy Cost: Low
Range: Long

Added to Inventory

Leo turned the blaster in his hand.

It felt surprisingly light.

Almost like the game knew exactly how heavy it should be.

Zip looked impressed.

“Oooo shiny weapon.”

Leo aimed it at a nearby rock and pulled the trigger.

PEW!

A bolt of blue energy shot forward and blasted a small crater in the rock.

Leo’s eyes widened.

“Nice.”

Guide-Bot hovered beside him.

“Weapon calibration successful.”

Another roar shook the cave.

This one sounded much closer.

Leo turned back toward the entrance.

“Right.”

He raised the blaster.

“Let’s meet the boss.”

The Stone Titan

Something enormous stepped out of the cave.

Leo froze.

The creature was easily three stories tall.

Its body looked like it was made entirely of jagged rock and crystal. Massive arms hung from its sides like stone pillars.

Glowing orange light pulsed from cracks across its body.

Its eyes burned like molten lava.

The Stone Titan looked down at Leo.

Then it roared again.

The sound blasted across the valley like thunder.

Zip hid behind a glowing plant.

“Nope nope nope.”

Guide-Bot calmly announced:

“Boss battle initiated.”

A massive red health bar appeared above the Titan.

STONE TITAN – HP: 1000

Leo looked at the number.

“ONE THOUSAND?!”

The Titan raised its arm.

Leo barely had time to react before the giant fist slammed into the ground.

BOOOOM.

The impact sent shockwaves through the valley.

Leo stumbled backward.

“Okay!” he yelled.

“Definitely a boss!”

The Titan swung again.

Leo dove to the side just in time.

The ground exploded where he had been standing.

Dust filled the air.

Leo rolled behind a large rock.

“Guide-Bot!”

“Yes, Player One.”

“How do I beat this thing?!”

The robot scanned the Titan.
