Chapter 1: The Game That Shouldn’t Exist
Leo Ramirez loved games more than anything.
Not just playing them—studying them.
Most kids at Westbrook Middle School rushed home to watch TV or scroll on their phones. Leo rushed home to beat the next level, unlock secret maps, and discover glitches nobody else knew about.
His room looked like a tiny gaming museum.
Posters of space battles covered the walls. A shelf held old controllers, game cartridges, and even a VR headset his uncle had given him last year. His desk sat under the window, where his tablet, keyboard, and headphones were always ready.
Leo flopped into his chair after finishing homework.
“Finally,” he said, stretching.
Outside, the sky was already dark. The quiet hum of the neighborhood filled the air—distant cars, barking dogs, and the occasional airplane flying toward the airport.
Perfect gaming time.
Leo tapped the screen of his tablet.
Usually he played the same games—space shooters, strategy games, or survival builders. But tonight something new appeared on his home screen.
A black square icon.
No picture.
Just glowing silver letters:
COSMIC QUEST
Leo frowned.
“Huh.”
He didn’t remember installing anything new.
He tapped the app store history.
Nothing.
No downloads.
No updates.
“That’s weird.”
Leo looked closer. The icon pulsed slowly, like it was breathing.
Maybe it was an ad game that installed itself automatically. Some apps did that.
Still ... something about it felt different.
Curious, Leo tapped it.
The screen went black.
Then stars appeared.
Thousands of them.
They slowly swirled together into a giant spiral galaxy.
“Okay,” Leo whispered. “Cool intro.”
A deep voice echoed from the speakers.
WELCOME, PLAYER.
Leo jumped.
“That’s ... dramatic.”
The screen flashed again.
Words appeared one at a time.
INITIALIZING PLAYER CONNECTION
SEARCHING FOR ACTIVE USER
PLAYER FOUND
Leo leaned closer.
“Player found?”
His name appeared on the screen.
LEO RAMIREZ
Leo froze.
“Wait ... what?”
He definitely hadn’t typed that.
The stars on the screen began spinning faster.
Then a message appeared:
WELCOME, PLAYER ONE
Below it was a single glowing button.
START GAME
Leo hesitated.
Something about this game felt ... strange.
Most games had menus, settings, tutorials.
This one had none of that.
Just START.
He glanced toward the hallway.
His parents were downstairs watching TV. The faint sound of laughter from a comedy show drifted upstairs.
Everything seemed normal.
“Relax,” Leo said to himself.
“It’s just a game.”
He tapped START.
For a moment nothing happened.
Then the tablet vibrated.
Hard.
Leo grabbed it before it slipped off the desk.
“Whoa—”
The screen flashed bright blue.
Brighter.
Brighter.
Leo covered his eyes.
“Okay that’s not norm—”
The room vanished.
The posters disappeared.
The desk disappeared.
The floor disappeared.
Leo felt like he was falling through light.
Wind roared past his ears.
Stars rushed around him.
“What is happening?!” Leo yelled.
Suddenly—
THUD.
Leo landed on something solid.
Cold metal.
He groaned and sat up.
“ ... Ow.”
The air smelled strange, like electricity and metal.
