Chapter 1: Attitudes about Public Nudity in Society

Coming of Age Sex Story: Chapter 1: Attitudes about Public Nudity in Society - Daan’s a high-school teacher whose research on the effects of school nudity brings him to the attention of the Program’s developers who want to employ him as a Program coordinator. Then his kids, who are opposed to immoral rules like the Program’s forced nudity, learn that it’s in his high school, where they’ll be starting soon. Oh boy! Fireworks? You bet. But the kids’ challenges aren’t over as they must keep dealing with their coordinator dad and school nudity issues when the family must move.

“Daan, do I hear Arie fussing?”

“He is; I’m on it, Kim. Don’t stop your work,” Arie’s dad, Daan Janssen, called to his wife Kimberly. “I’ll check him. Must have a messy diaper.”

“Thanks, dear. I’m almost done reviewing anyway. Damn, I’ll be glad when I get these boards finished.”

Daan’s wife, Kimberly Arno, was preparing for Step 2 of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination, commonly known as the medical boards, the final step in allowing her to become a licensed physician. Her specialty field was psychiatry. She had previously completed a PhD degree in neuroscience from Boston University, and would receive her MD degree this spring. She and Daan wanted to stay in the Boston area so she had applied for the medical school’s affiliated residency program at the Boston Medical Center, BMC. This wasn’t a typical step; new physicians usually did their residency at a different clinical location from their medical school, but Kimberly had chosen to study altered states of consciousness in her PhD program and had previously published two important papers on the dissociative state, articles based on her dissertation research. The BMC had a highly regarded psychiatry department and its head, the chief of psychiatry, wanted Kimberly to join their staff, so she had been selected for their residency program.

Daan walked into his infant son’s room to be greeted by the sight of four tiny limbs waving in the air above a squirming, dark-haired baby boy. The sounds Arie was making sounded insistent and plaintive. The odor that reached Daan’s nose told the rest of the story.

“Yeah, Arie’s diaper is full,” Daan groaned. “Maybe we need to ease up on his beef meals,” he muttered. “This kid’s poop can get really stinky.”

Arie was eight months old, having been born the past July. As Daan was taping up the sides of his son’s fresh diaper, Kimberly joined him.

“Thanks for doing that, honey. I was just reviewing the last part of the practice exam, and my head is swimming. One of the practice questions in the final set I worked on was on psychiatry and was a doozy. The patient reported dreaming about being naked and seeing naked people everywhere and found it distracting and disturbing, to the extent that it was interfering with his life. The question asked to offer some possible diagnoses, recommend a course of treatment, and give the rationale for that reasoning.”

“Jeez, sweetie, that’s a strange question,” Daan mused. “Why would they focus on nudity?”

“Nudity in dreams is common, sweetie; you know that. And of course, public nudity is much more common these days than just a few years ago, but that question? Dream nudity doesn’t really intrude into waking life normally. Jeez. Such a general question, there were so many answer possibilities. Is his problem caused by shame or guilt, or is it related to anxiety? Other possibilities are obsessive and compulsive disorder or gymnophobia. The cause could be from a prior trauma like a sexual assault, or body dysmorphia, or even a general anxiety about sexuality. It could be anxiety from a fear that his nudity is body shaming or that he is somehow exposed and unprotected. Another possible fear is that he believes that he’s physically inferior in some way, like having a micropenis. So there was no clear answer and my response was to list a few possibilities and I wrote that an actual diagnosis and treatment plan required further discussion with the patient.”

“So what was the answer?” Daan asked.

“I had listed all the more common diagnosis possibilities that the answer required, plus several additional ones, and that the case required further therapy sessions, so, yay, I was correct,” Kimberly smiled. “Damn, after tomorrow, no more exams until I have to take Part 3 of the boards. That’s when I finish my first residency year.”

The two parents kissed Arie, who looked very sleepy, and Daan put him down in his crib. They checked the baby monitor, turned the night light on and the main light off, and tiptoed out of the room.

When they were out of the room, Daan said, “Say, honey, I saw in the TV program guide that there’s that monthly news documentary program on tomorrow night and there’s a special about the changed social attitudes toward public nudity. It caught my eye ‘cause one of the guests is to be Eleanor Garner.”

“Oh, really? Jeez, I need to watch that show for sure,” Kimberly told him.

“Do you keep in touch with her?”

“Yeah, I do, but not as much now as when I was working on my doctorate. She was my external committee member and a collaborator on one of my projects, you’ll recall.”

Daan knew that in many universities, the doctoral candidate’s faculty dissertation committee includes a member who is not affiliated with that university.

“I wonder why the network show asked her to appear,” Daan remarked.

“So, at the Horning Institute, her research specialty is on the physiological symptoms and signs of stress from negative emotion causes such as fright, shame, and humiliation. Nudity, when it’s unexpectedly encountered or a person is forced to strip—like a lot of high schools are doing now with that new naked P.E. class initiative that’s started—will evoke those reactions, so that could be why. My PhD research covered the related area: what happens to the human psyche when it’s highly overloaded with stress—as a reaction to extreme fright or even terror—and I made some important progress in understanding the dissociative state.”

“Yeah, the mind kind of shuts down somehow and the person seems like a robot in a way,” Daan observed. “Like an out-of-body experience, OBE, but more severe. We studied about that state a fair amount in my graduate psychology program.”

“So there’s always been this argument about dissociation, whether it’s a pathological response akin to a neurosis or even a psychosis like a schizoid reaction, or whether it’s a protective mechanism that the brain takes to absorb the shock and allow the person’s psyche to slowly recover. In my research, you’ll recall that I told you about my findings about changes in the brain’s pyramidal tracts and the PAG—the periaqueductal gray—in the dissociative patients I was able to work with. Those findings allowed me to go further in seeking proof that the dissociative state can be a built-in protective neuro-psychological response to overwhelming stress, since in lower animals, those brain areas are associated with the animals’ protective freezing responses when faced with a threat, where any tiny motion will attract a predator’s attention.

“In fact, some people can voluntarily enter such a state—called volitional dissociation—in order to intentionally separate themselves from terribly unpleasant experiences. In my research, I found that the same brain mechanisms, from the most severe forms of dissociation with depersonalization and derealization, to volitional dissociation, exist on a continuum and that a person’s predisposition to have such responses can vary greatly between individuals.”

“So Eleanor’s research and yours kind of complemented each other’s, right?”

“Exactly. Listen, I’m tired and need to sleep now. The exam starts at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow; it’s more than eight hours long. They only allow a total of sixty minutes of rest or break time, which includes lunch break, and I want to be fresh.”

“Sure, darling. Don’t worry about Arie. I’ll do the overnight feeding and diaper detail if he wakes. He’s almost at eight hours sleep now, and since it’s almost 10 p.m., he should sleep till maybe 6 a.m. You go get some rest.”

Just after 4:30 p.m. on the following day, Daan was in his school office going through several folders. He leaned back, rubbed his eyes, and looked out the window where the late afternoon sunlight was streaming through the glass, bathing the room in its red-tinted golden light. Spring was just around the corner and he couldn’t wait for the warmer days. His phone rang; it was Kimberly.

“It’s me, honey ... Just leaving the exam room. That was exhausting; my poor eyes are all worn out.”

“Wow, sweetie, so how do you think you did?” he asked her.

“I’m sure I nailed it. I actually studied about half of the questions that were on the exam, and I knew the other stuff cold. They grade by AI—you know, computer, so I’ll get my results in about ten days. Say, should I get Arie from day care?”

“No, you just go home and kick back. You’ve had a lot of stress the past month with both studying and your clinical duties. I had a light day and my swimming coaching is pretty much over for the season; just tidying up the paperwork. My last class ended two hours ago, but I had a bunch of administrative AD jobs to finish up. Say, I’ve got some interesting but mostly concerning news about some instructional changes at my school that I’ll tell you. Let me finish up here and I’ll be able to leave in ten minutes and I’ll pick Arie up.”

Daan actually had several jobs; in addition to his being the school’s assistant athletic director (AD), he was a health and physical education teacher at Newton Charter High School; this was a new school in the district and had opened only three years ago, drawing its students from the other two local high schools. Also, with his master’s degrees in psychology and clinical social work, he served not only as the school’s head counselor, he also was the school district’s unofficial psychologist. Finally, he was the swimming team coach. Daan was an NCAA collegiate recordholder; his record time in the 400-meter individual medley event earned in his competing for his alma mater, the University of Virginia, was yet unbroken.

In the state, each high schools’ head swimming coach led both the boys’ and girls’ swimming programs, which had been essentially gender-merged in all of the Massachusetts schools several years ago and typically, each high school had a single head swimming coach. That coach was usually supported by an opposite-sex assistant coach who would deal with the issues of their own sex when needed. Since Daan’s school had a selective admission policy—it maintained an enrollment of about 800 students—those multiple jobs were doable for one person.

When he arrived home with Arie, Kimberly had already begun to prepare dinner, so Daan set Arie in his playpen and went to help her.

“I got more weird stuff today, Kim; it’s in this notice from daycare,” he said when he went into the kitchen. “Their April newsletter was handed out today, so listen to this; it says, quote, ‘ ... and we’re happy to report that the children are adjusting very well to our new clothing-optional play periods.’ Unquote. Getting the little ones naked too? Jeez. Fits right in with that TV program tonight, doesn’t it?”

Kimberly was taking some bags of fresh vegetables out of the refrigerator. She opened one and began to wash its contents.

“Huh. It sure does. Society’s changing, I guess. Want another example? Look at today’s newspaper. The headline under the fold.”

Daan looked. “Wow. You’re right, jeez, so crazy. It says, ‘MBTA Updates Rules for Nude Passengers.’”

“Yeah, and last week, when I was on the main campus over near the Charles River, there were bunches of naked students sunning or just walking around. Now that the weather’s warming up, I guess seeing nudity on campus will be common,” Kimberly said.

“Hey, I have a thought, Kim. You think your sister might want to see that broadcast tonight?”

“Mmm, yeah. Good idea. They may say something useful for her to use in teaching her ed psych course. I’ll text her to let her know. Be right back. Wash and cut up the rest of these veggies, okay?”

A few minutes later, “Okay, she already knew about the program and plans to watch it too,” Kimberly reported.

Kimberly’s stepsister, Susan Cummings, was a postdoctoral associate in education at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg; her husband Brian was an assistant professor of history at that school. They had a daughter, Jordan, who was virtually the same age as Arie, both having been born in mid-July.

“So what’s that news from your school that you mentioned, then?” Kimberly asked.

“Yeah. It was about following that naked P.E. class initiative that I oppose. Beginning next week, and following ‘suggestions’”—he made finger quotes—”from both the state Education Department and the state Phys Ed Teachers’ Association, Sanderson has decided to comply and make our P.E. classes, which are co-ed, as you know, fully naked. Also, my spring-term Health and Psych classes are supposed to be held naked now, and will now cover hands-on sex ed instead of just textbook and handout teaching.

“I’ve got my hands full now counseling kids who have problems like dealing with identity- development issues as adolescents, their worries about acceptance and bullying, and their self-image challenges, which have grown with all the public nudity around them. And now I’ll need to add frikkin’ nudity problems in a school context on top of all that. The change the district made requires kids to participate in our P.E. classes while naked and I don’t know how we could enforce that. The other P.E. teachers and I would never allow the use of physical force to compel anyone to strip. Anyway, we’re supposed to be trialling this dress-code change to class nudity to see how to make the nudity tolerable for the incoming class next fall.”

Kimberly nodded at that. “Sure, good luck there. Teens, body image, and nudity? I don’t envy you guys. Even though public nudity’s been getting more common, adolescents are slower to follow the other age groups.”

“For sure, thanks, honey. Anyway, our two younger P.E. teachers told me that they heard stuff going on in schools in other states about that required nudity in P.E. classes—they’ve kept in touch with their ed school classmates—and there’s a difference of opinion among all of them about whether it’s good or bad. The consensus came down on the ‘somewhat bad’ side. But all of us teachers here in Newton agreed that we really hated any rule that smacked of forcing unwilling kids to do anything, and that includes this nudity and the sex-ed crap; so we agreed to be compassionate as much as we can; maybe ease reluctant kids into joining in. We did agree that making challenges and pushing the kids’ limits might be okay, though. Anyway, that’s the plan till we see how things go.”

“Jeez. Hope you can figure out what’s best for the kids,” Kimberly commiserated. “And I certainly agree; any forcing is terrible and can be psychologically damaging. Lately, the adolescent psych unit in the hospital is seeing a slight increase in complaints of excessive stress in kids and that stress appears to be coming from the new nudity morality in society. It seems to be mostly related to those kids’ body-image and self-image issues, you know, things like peer acceptance concerns, and also those body-image challenges can be ascribed to histories of abuse, mental, physical, and sexual. Imposing a mandatory nudity requirement on such kids would be an awful thing to do. Um, who’s Sanderson? Oh, he’s the new district superintendent. So how do you personally feel about the nudity edict? When was this decided?”

Daan laughed. “Spoken just like a shrink... ‘How do you feel about... ‘ Ha! Not ‘What do you think about... ‘ We found out just today, dear. The possibility was mentioned in this morning’s staff meeting and the final decision came in the early afternoon. I’m irritated because, as the supposed district psychologist, my thoughts on this change were never solicited.”

“How will you handle the classes, Daan?” she asked.

“We all got a lot of reading material about that, dear. Pages and pages of guidelines, cautions, possible lesson plans, suggestions ... all kinds of crap like that. As lead P.E. teacher, I’ll read it and decide how I want to proceed. Then get the buy-in from the others. Sanderson said that the P.E. teachers should basically do what we felt was best.”

“Gives you lots of leeway then.”

“It does. Good thing too; glad we won’t have to fight for what we think is proper.”

“Didn’t your parents raise you with a casual attitude toward nudity, though?” Kimberly asked. “You know, their being Dutch and all, and you grew up in an area which was heavily settled by Dutch immigrants, and you know how the Dutch are said to be—actually many Europeans are very casual about public nudity.”

“Huh, well, sure, around our home, casual undress was common, but outside the home? Jeez, the town where we lived was mostly socially conservative,” Daan told her. “We had a large number of Dutch Reformed—Calvinist Protestant churches—in my area. But those Dutch immigrants mostly came to the U.S. back in the 1840s and were pretty extreme in their conservatism back then. They’re not so extreme now, but plenty of the folks there still are quite conservative. My folks weren’t religious; they came here in the late 1970s and told me that when they emigrated, back in the Netherlands, about half of the Dutch didn’t practice any religion. So we didn’t attend any church, for one thing. But my friends growing up heard sermons from their pastors condemning the occasional nudity that was shown on TV. Yeah, I guess my parents shaped my social attitudes more than my friends and their families ... Damn, look at the mess Arie made. Cleanup time!”

After dinner and the cleanup of the mess Arie made by his slinging food around, they got him changed and put down until his next diaper call. But that shouldn’t happen until after the TV program was over, his parents figured. At 8 p.m., they sat down to watch.

After the generic opening of the show and a commercial, the program began. The camera’s view first showed the head view of a carefully made-up woman of about 35 to 40 years old. Her shoulder-length blond hair was teased into gentle waves which floated softly around her head. Behind her was the left half of a very large video screen which was currently displaying a stylized map of the United States with the western portion visible. She began speaking.

“Welcome to April’s episode of the ABO Network’s ‘Monthly News Documentary.’ I’m Roxanne Williams, tonight’s co-host.”

The camera switched to the head view of a man, also about 40 years of age, who was wearing a slight smile as if he was having an amusing thought. His features and hair styling looked so perfect that it was apparent that the make-up people had pampered him too. Behind him, the other half of the U.S. map on the video screen could be seen.

“And I’m Rogers Devlin, joining Roxanne to present tonight’s show. Welcome to our studio audience and to all of our viewers.”

The camera switched back to Williams.

“The theme of tonight’s show is how American society has come to accept public nudity in a comparatively short time. We’ll be discussing this very odd cultural change in our society which has developed unusually rapidly over the past several years, and many of our viewers have personally been affected by this change, both socially and occupationally. We’ll also discuss how the changed attitude of the citizens of our country toward public nudity has evolved over such a short time. It’s been noted by both sociologists, as well as the typical citizen, that for many years, our society has existed under what has been called by many, our ‘nudity taboo.’

“Because of how our country’s culture began, that is, its mores were strongly influenced first by the conservative Puritans who colonized the mid-Atlantic area of the New World, and then by the attitudes of the many conservative religious factions which replaced them socially and culturally. While society’s changes in many western countries—that’s mostly Europe—allowed more and more body-centric freedom, our own society continued to remain staunchly conservative as it has been for more than four hundred years. Thus our culture lacks any tradition of the public exposure of the body; I’m referring to our society’s aversion to nudity, nudity in public, as opposed to the evolved customs of most of the other Western societies of Europe.”
