Chapter 7: The Choice of Two Civilizations

The light around them softened.

The overwhelming brilliance of the Threshold dimmed into a vast, shimmering expanse — a place that felt neither physical nor abstract, but something in between. The crew stood on what resembled a surface, though it had no texture, no temperature, no weight. It was like standing on a thought.

Mara stood before them, radiant with the soft glow of the Lumen. Patterns of light flowed beneath her skin, shifting with her emotions. She looked human — but more. Expanded. Connected.

Rafe stepped toward her, unable to hide the mix of relief and fear in his voice. “Mara ... what have they done to you?”

She smiled gently. “Nothing I didn’t choose.”

Talia approached, eyes wide with awe. “You’re ... merged with them.”

Mara nodded. “Partially. Enough to understand. Enough to see.”

Kaito swallowed. “See what?”

Mara turned, and the space around them shifted.

The luminous expanse dissolved into a panorama of stars — not as humans saw them, but as the Lumen perceived them. Each star was a node in a vast network of gravitational threads, pulsing with information. Space itself was alive with structure.

Talia gasped. “This is ... a map.”

Mara nodded. “A map of the galaxy. The Lumen’s domain.”

Arjun whispered, “How far does it go?”

Mara’s voice was soft. “Everywhere.”

The Origin of the Lumen The stars shifted again.

A new image formed — a world bathed in golden light, its surface covered in crystalline structures that resembled the ring around the rogue planet.

Mara spoke as the vision unfolded.

“The Lumen were once biological. Like us. Curious. Driven. They sought to understand the universe not through conquest, but through resonance — through the fundamental language of physics.”

The world shimmered, then fractured into a lattice of light.

“They discovered how to transcend physical form. How to exist as patterns of gravitational and quantum resonance. They became a civilization of pure understanding.”

Talia whispered, “They evolved into energy.”

“Not energy,” Mara corrected. “Information. Consciousness woven into spacetime.”

Kaito frowned. “But why build the ring? Why send the signal?”

The vision shifted again — showing the rogue planet drifting through the void, the ring dormant around it.

“The Lumen left behind gateways,” Mara said. “Anchors. Places where physical beings could cross into their domain.”

Rafe’s voice hardened. “Why? To recruit us?”

Mara shook her head. “To warn us.”

The Coming Threat The stars dimmed.

A new shape emerged — a dark, swirling mass that distorted the space around it. Not a black hole. Not a star. Something else.

Something hungry.

Talia stepped back. “What is that?”

Mara’s expression darkened. “A collapse wave.”

Kaito’s eyes widened. “A what?”

“A region of spacetime destabilization,” Mara explained. “A chain reaction triggered by an ancient cosmic event. It’s expanding. Slowly. But inevitably.”

Rafe frowned. “How far?”

Mara looked at him, her voice barely above a whisper. “It will reach our region of the galaxy in a few thousand years.”

Arjun scoffed. “A few thousand years? That’s not our problem.”
