Chapter 6: The Threshold Opens
The core chamber blazed with white light.
Not the soft, rhythmic glow from before — this was something new, something urgent. The crystalline walls shimmered like liquid glass, and the air vibrated with a deep harmonic resonance that made the Ardent’s hull tremble.
Talia shielded her eyes. “It’s activating again!”
Kaito’s console erupted with warnings. “Energy levels spiking — but controlled. It’s not an overload. It’s ... preparation.”
Rafe stepped forward, jaw set. “For what?”
The answer came not from the crew, but from the Lumen.
A voice — a presence — filled the chamber.
The Threshold opens. Choose your path.
The white light condensed into a swirling vortex at the center of the chamber, larger than before, brighter, more defined. It pulsed like a living thing.
Arjun backed away. “No. No, no, no. We’re not going in there.”
Talia stared at the vortex, mesmerized. “It’s stable. More stable than when Mara crossed.”
Kaito nodded. “The energy signature is different. It’s ... accommodating multiple mass signatures.”
Rafe’s heart pounded. “Meaning?”
Talia turned to him. “It’s opening for all of us.”
The Captain’s Burden
Rafe looked at his crew — Talia, Kaito, Arjun, the others who had gathered on the deck. Their faces were a mix of fear and awe, lit by the swirling white light.
He felt the weight of command settle on his shoulders like a physical force.
“If we go through,” he said quietly, “we may not come back.”
Talia stepped forward. “If we don’t go through, Mara won’t come back.”
Kaito added, “And we lose the greatest discovery in human history.”
Arjun shook his head. “Or we lose our lives.”
Rafe turned to him. “You don’t have to come.”
Arjun blinked. “What?”
“You heard me,” Rafe said. “If you want to stay behind, take the Ardent. Return to Earth. Tell them what happened.”
Arjun stared at him, stunned. “You’d ... let me leave?”
Rafe nodded. “I won’t force anyone to cross.”
Silence.
Then Arjun exhaled shakily. “I’m terrified. But I’m not abandoning Mara. Or any of you.”
Rafe felt something loosen in his chest. “Good.”
He turned to the vortex.
The light pulsed in response.
Cross. Become. Understand.
Rafe whispered, “We’re coming, Mara.”
The Final Preparations
The crew moved quickly.
Talia secured the data cores, ensuring every bit of information they’d gathered would remain intact. Kaito recalibrated the inertial dampeners to withstand unknown gravitational forces. Arjun set the Ardent into a stable automated holding pattern inside the chamber.
Eos 7’s voice echoed through the deck. “Warning. The Threshold’s energy field is incompatible with standard ship systems. The Ardent cannot cross.”
Rafe nodded. “We’re not taking the ship.”
Talia looked at him. “Then how do we get through?”
Rafe pointed to the vortex. “We walk.”
Kaito swallowed. “On foot? Into a dimensional interface?”
