Chapter 8: Busy Day
A villager suddenly arrived, calling out that his pigs were refusing to eat. Although Kelo had passed away, Dino had been Kelo’s apprentice for over six months, travelling not only to nearby villages but eventually to more distant ones. Since Kelo was not one to easily shirk a task, he took Dino and left with the villager immediately.
Dino first took Kelo’s box to the house and administered injections to the pigs. Subsequently, he attended to a separate family of approximately twenty chickens located outside. These chickens had consumed rice contaminated with rat poison. Dino performed a straightforward surgical procedure on the chickens: he cut open their feed bag, removed the poisoned rice, washed the bag, placed a small amount of poison inside, and then stitched the bag closed.
This reminded him of his three testicles. His scrotum was just like a chicken’s feed sac; you could simply cut it open, take out an egg, and then sew it back up—it was that easy.
That day was filled with numerous tasks. He had barely completed one job when a call came in, requiring him to vaccinate the calf. By the time he finally finished his duties and returned home, night had already fallen.
From a distance, Black Panther approached and informed him that, the moment he left, Old Lady Martha had been trying to coax Lele into watching cartoons while pulling Maya away from the jar containing the silver ingots.
Dino didn’t care how much money he received; what he was most worried about was whether his performance was genuine and whether Old Lady Martha would believe it.
“I believe it, of course I believe it.” Black Panther nodded his head wildly: “When the old woman saw the silver ingot, she laughed like crazy. She said that your master had finally done a good deed. She also said that you are a lucky person. If you can keep it, you should keep it for a while longer.”
“It’s good that you believe me.”
A sigh of relief escaped Dino as he looked at the house cloaked in twilight. The thought of Maya’s gentle face illuminated by the lamplight filled his heart with happiness.
Back home, after putting down the suitcase, Lele immediately wanted to be carried, and Maya, as usual, poured him a cup of cold tea.
This herbal tea is not the kind from White Mausom, where you boil water, add tea leaves, and let it cool.
[A/N: White Mausom is the name of a place/village]
After drinking a cup of herbal tea, the refreshing coolness is so invigorating that it washes away the day’s fatigue.
“The food is ready, let’s eat.”
Maya had already cooked the meal, but she hadn’t eaten it yet, waiting for Dino to return.
Dino sighed and looked at the food on the table, feeling a warm glow in his heart. He especially loved this feeling of home.
“Madam, here’s the money we collected today.”
Before eating, he took out the money he had collected that day and handed it to Maya. There was more than $12 in total. This was how it was done when Kelo was still around. He would collect money from house calls and then hand it to Maya when he returned.
Maya hesitated today and said, “Your master is gone too, so you should keep this money yourself.”
“That won’t do.” Dino shook his head:
“We agreed that I wouldn’t take any money for three years.”
“But your master is gone.”
“I learned my skills from my master, and I haven’t even graduated yet, so how can I get paid?” Dino shook his head.
Driven by her greed, Old Lady Martha quickly interjected: “Given your prior statement and the fact that these people are here because of my son’s reputation, Maya, you really must agree. You can, at most, offer him some money later.”
After she said that, and Dino looked resolute, Maya took the money.
