Chapter 29: Maya’s Classmate
However, the doctor said the situation was relatively good, which put Old Lady Martha and the others at ease. But then an annoying thing happened: there were no wards available, so they couldn’t be admitted to the hospital.
The People’s Hospital is not large, but it has an unusually high patient volume. If it were just a common cold or something, they could just get an IV drip in the corridor. But Milan’s injuries are so severe that he can’t be left untreated.
Old Lady Martha immediately started crying and screaming again, looking for the doctor and grabbing at the head doctor, grabbing whoever she could, crying and screaming, pleading and complaining. This was her fierce side. Although it wasn’t pretty, sometimes people have to put aside their pride. Maya, on the other hand, was too delicate. Although she also cried, she couldn’t do it.
But no wards meant no wards. No matter how much she begged, cried, or even threatened to burn the hospital down if her husband died, nothing worked.
Milan was receiving an IV drip in the corridor. Loki, somewhat impatient, looked Dino up and down a few times and said, “You are Dino.”
This was the first time Dino had met Loki. Loki was about twenty-six or twenty-seven years old, of medium height, not as tall as Dino, with a thin face and a thin build. His features were decent, but he looked at people with a slightly slanted gaze, like Kelo.
However, Kelo was cunning in a real way, while Dino usually heard Old Lady Martha complaining about him. This Loki, on the other hand, only knew how to be mean to his family, and at most, he would play cards and cheat. He didn’t have any real skills.
These things were irrelevant to Dino. The only thing he could think of was that Loki was Maya’s brother. He forced a smile and said, “Yes, you must be Brother Loki.”
He offered her a cigarette. He didn’t smoke himself, but he always carried a pack of cigarettes in his bag and would occasionally give one to someone.
Loki took the cigarette, glanced at it, and said with a hint of disdain, “My mom said you have a good income.”
Dino then smiled ingratiatingly.
His overly honest and simple nature didn’t suit Loki’s taste, and the two didn’t have much to say to each other. Old Lady Martha was still crying and making a fuss, and Loki got annoyed, so he went over and yelled, “What are you wailing about? he’s just hanging out in the corridor with an IV drip, he’s not going to die.”
These words were really unpleasant, but since they were family, Old Lady Martha was able to listen to them. Sure enough, her voice softened a bit. She came over and, together with Maya, stayed by Milan’s side. Maya could only shed tears. Seeing her cry made Dino feel uneasy, but there was nothing he could do about it.
Suddenly, someone called out, “Maya?”
Dino looked up and saw a young man, about twenty-five or twenty-six years old, thin, wearing glasses and a shirt, but with leather sandals and stockings underneath. This attire was different from that of a farmer; he must be from the city.
“You are ... Tony Grey.”
Maya recognized her, too.
“It really is you. Six or seven years have passed, and you haven’t changed at all.”
Maya recognized him, and Tony’s face lit up. Dino knew at a glance that this man had designs on Maya.
Then Maya started chatting with Tony. Dino listened from the side and understood that Maya and Tony were high school classmates. Maya did not get into university and stayed at home for two years before getting married, while Tony got into university and is now back working at the municipal government.
Upon hearing that he worked at the municipal government, Old Lady Martha’s eyes lit up, and she chimed in, “Oh my, even the mayor recognizes him, how impressive!”
