Chapter 25: She called at MidNight
Dino hurriedly smiled and said it wasn’t a problem, but he was a little worried. Luckily, he understood dog language, so he checked the Golden Retriever and carefully questioned it. It turned out that its leg had indeed been hit and broken, but the rest of its body was fine.
Once the injury was clear, things became easier. Dino comforted the golden retriever, first setting the broken bone and applying medicine. Then he took out a splint and bandage from the box, bandaged the golden retriever, and gave it some pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medication.
This was originally a very simple matter, but Monica kept a close watch on him, and Sister Merry was also making a lot of noise, saying things like “be gentle” and “look carefully” from time to time, which made Dino very nervous and sweat profusely.
He was particularly nervous when he noticed thatMonica seemed to glance at him a few more times. However, he later realized the problem: the golden retriever was not only exceptionally obedient in his hands, but it also wouldn’t bark even when it was in pain, unlike inMonica’s arms, where it would bark at the slightest touch.Monica had a keen eye and could naturally spot the oddity at a glance.
After bandaging the dog and giving it medicine, the Golden Retriever was in less pain. Dino comforted it a few more times, and the Golden Retriever started wagging its tail.Monica carried the Golden Retriever upstairs. Sister Merry told Dino to wait. She went upstairs and asked a couple of questions. Then she came down, took out a hundred dollars, and gave it to Dino, saying, “Come with me.”
The dog is cured. What else is needed? Dino was puzzled, but Sister Merry was so arrogant that he didn’t dare to ask and followed behind.
Sister Merry led him for about five or six hundred meters, then pointed to a small hotel across the street and said, “The dog is badly injured.Mayor DC is worried. You will stay at the hotel tonight and are not allowed to go anywhere. If we call you, come right away.”
As he spoke, he glanced at Dino’s waist and asked, “You don’t have a cell phone?”
Dino looked distressed. Was he being told he had to stay in a hotel to keep watch? That was outrageous! But the mayor was the one in charge; what could he do? He shook his head: “No.”
Sister Merry took a brand new cell phone out of her handbag: “Take this phone, it’s at your beck and call anytime. If you dare to run around, you’ll see.”
Would Dino dare to run away? He had no choice but to book a hotel. A standard double room costs $10, and Dino gasped in pain.
It was still early, so Dino sat in his room feeling sullen. He played on his phone for a while and then tried calling home. Maya answered, and when he heard her soft “hello,” all of Dino’s worries vanished. However, he didn’t mention that he had called from his phone; he only said he needed medical treatment that night and would be staying in the city.
Maya gave a few instructions, then hung up, feeling bad about the phone bill.
There were internet cafes on the street. Dino spent two hours online, which cost him $1. Then he found a stall and ate a bowl of noodles for $0.50. It wasn’t even enough to fill him up. He decided to stop eating and just stay for one night. He could eat when he got back tomorrow.
