Chapter 20: Good Medicines
Completely baffled by Dino’s bizarre behavior, Yong Lama was left speechless. He could only manage a confused nod and repeated, “It’s good medicine, it’s good medicine.”
A slight worry crept into the Lama’s mind: “Will my dog be alright after eating this?”
Dino let out a light chuckle. “Don’t fret. If anything happens to your dog after it eats this, feel free to sue me. My life is certainly worth more than a dog’s.”
Yong Lama offered no reply, deeming Dino’s ten lives less valuable than his dog’s. Despite this, since Dino had spoken, Yong Lama held his tongue, though a silent rage simmered. He thought, “If my dog didn’t get well, just wait—you’re dead.”
Ironically, Yong Lama’s hair had turned entirely white. Meanwhile, after receiving medicine, the two dogs were bursting with energy, bounding and leaping, much to the delight of the long-legged beauty, whose squeals filled the air.
The long-legged beauty was wearing tight-wash jeans and a light purple shirt today. Dino didn’t dare to look at her the other day, but he took a closer look today and secretly compared them, thinking, “They’re about the same size as Sister Maya’s, but definitely not as soft as Sister Mays’s.”
Yong Lama finally departed in haste after Dino promised to provide free treatment for any health issues the two Tibetan mastiffs might have over the following year. Old Lady Martha, ecstatic and beaming with joy, immediately killed a chicken. She then asked Maya to gather chili peppers from the garden, mentioning that their current stock was insufficient and that Dino enjoyed spicy meals.
Maya’s face, which had been filled with sorrow for the past few days, suddenly seemed to have been ironed smooth, and a faint glow appeared.
She actually called out to Dino, “Dino, why don’t you go too and pour some water on the chili peppers?”
She used to be afraid of what people would say when she went out, so she never dared to ask Dino to go with her. But today she has changed her mind, and Old Lady Martha did not object.
“Okay.” Dino happily agreed, carried a load of water, and went to the vegetable garden with Maya. Maya picked chili peppers while Dino watered the plants.
The vegetable garden was behind the bamboo mountain, and you had to walk through a bamboo forest to get there. On the way back, when he reached the middle of the bamboo forest, Dino said, “Sister, let’s take a break.”
“Are you tired? Then sit down for a while.”
Maya put down her basket and looked gently at Dino. Dino looked back at her. Maya’s face slowly turned red, and she said with a slight reproach, “Why are you looking at me like that?”
“Sister, do you think I can marry you?”
Maya lowered her head, her face flushed, and whispered, “I would rather die than marry another.”
Dino understood her meaning: if he couldn’t marry her, she would rather die than marry him.
Dino was thrilled. He took her hand, put his arm around her waist, and held her in his arms. Her waist was soft, like a bamboo shoot that had just sprouted in spring.
“Sister,” Dino called softly.
“Mmm.” Maya gave a soft “Mmm,” glanced at him, and then lowered her head again.
