Chapter 19: Easy Money
When he got home, Maya had cooked dinner and was waiting for him. Dino ate six big bowls in one go and still wanted to eat, but there was no more rice left.
Maya said, “I’ll cook some more for you.”
“No need,” Dino shook his head.
Old Lady Martha watched coldly from the side the whole time, and Dino didn’t even look at her.
Maya didn’t come out to rest in the cool evening; she stayed inside watching TV. Old Lady Martha didn’t go out to visit anyone either. Dino sat on the ground, listening to the lights go out in the inner room, and Maya and the other two went to sleep. After sitting for a while, he said to the old medicine dog, “Send a message to those two Tibetan mastiffs to start faking illness in three days, and make it look serious.”
“Yes, sir.” Before the old medicine dog could respond, the master barked excitedly and rushed up the bamboo mountain to send the message.
However, he wasn’t familiar with the dogs here, so the old medicine dog went up and barked a few more times.
Dino remained indoors for three consecutive days. Initially, Old Lady Martha merely observed with cold detachment, but her attitude soon shifted to open sneering. Black Panther later informed Dino that Old Lady Martha had been speaking ill of him to Maya, calling him a heavy eater yet utterly useless. Despite her harsh words, Black Panther assured Dino that Old Lady Martha acknowledged his need to eat his fill of rice and promised she would no longer interfere with his relationship with Maya.
It is also said that Maya was secretly crying behind her back.
Dino could see that Maya was heartbroken, and he felt a sharp pain in his heart, but he didn’t speak to her. Empty words would be useless.
On the fourth day, he finally received a call from Yong Lama.
“Little Friend,” Yong Lama said aggressively, “the illness came back after only three days of treatment. What should be done?”
“You can have someone else treat them,” Dino said coldly.
“What do you mean?” Yong Lama was stunned for a moment, then his voice rose, and he became angry.
Dino ignored him and said, “It’s easy to cure him in one go; it’ll cost $5k, not a penny less.”
“$5k?” Yong Lama yelled from the other end, “Why don’t you just rob someone?”
Dino hung up the phone immediately.
‘Do you really think honest people are easy to bully?’
Then, Black Panther sent a message to the old medicine dog, causing the Tibetan Mastiff to feign death intermittently.
That evening, Yong Lama called, but Dino avoided the call, so Maya took it. Dino quickly instructed her, “Sister, just tell them I’m not here. If they need treatment, they should bring the dog over tomorrow.”
Confused, Maya relayed the message. Yong Lama called again around midnight, and Maya, an honest woman, even got out of bed and asked Dino to answer the phone.
Dino had no choice but to go downstairs and answer the phone. Yong Lama’s tone was much softer, and he addressed him politely: “Mr.Dino, my dog is dying. Do you have time? I’ll send a car to pick him up.”
“Come over tomorrow morning, I don’t want to move tonight.” Dino hung up the phone.
Maya watched from the side: “Dino.”
She wore a floral nightgown underneath a cardigan; her chest was full, and she had a warm fragrance about her.
Dino wanted to hold her in his arms, kiss her, and touch her, but he restrained himself.
He was capable of marrying Maya, and his failure to do so means that his actions—kissing and touching her—were an act of bullying.
He won’t do that.
“It’s nothing.” Dino shook his head. “It’s late, sister, you should go to sleep early too.”
