Chapter 12: Grandma Park
Dino walked over and called out to Granny Park. Granny Park looked up at him, her eyes slightly narrowed, and asked, “Which one?”
He hadn’t noticed it before when he looked down, but now that he looked up, especially when she was speaking, Dino noticed that her mouth was indeed crooked, twitching to one side. It was normal when she closed her mouth, but it was crooked when she spoke. In the local dialect, it’s called “crooked mouth wind”.
Dino said with a smile, “Grandma Park, I am Dino, and I am Kelo’s apprentice.”
As soon as Kelo was mentioned, Old Lady Park immediately knew: “So you’re the Kelo’s apprentice. Good, good. It’s a pity your master passed away so early. Where are you going?”
“I came here specifically to see you.” Dino said what he had prepared: “Before my master left, he told me that he had asked for a prescription for your illness, and he had originally agreed to come and treat you personally, but then something unexpected happened. I only remembered it yesterday, so I brought this medicine to you.”
Upon hearing this, Granny Park’s eyes lit up: “Really? Kelo is so thoughtful. I knew he was a good person. What’s the prescription for that medicine? I’ll go get it.”
“I brought the medicine, but the method of decocting it is a bit unique. Grandma Park, let me go to your house with you. I will decoct it for you and give you a massage so that it will take effect faster.”
“Okay, okay, okay.” Grandma Park was delighted. She came out of the vegetable garden and brought Dino home.
Deputy Park was at home; it was still early, and he hadn’t gone to work yet. He was in his thirties and very thin. He was very enthusiastic when he heard that Dino was an apprentice of Kelo and had come to treat his mother’s illness.
Dino personally went to the kitchen, filled a medicine pot with water, put the cicadas in, and personally supervised the decoction. Then he poured the cicadas out and threw them away. This was what Old Four said last night: the Wellfords’ experience: see the medicine but not the prescription; see the water but not the medicine.
After Grandma Park took the medicine, Dino massaged her cheeks.
Kelo is quite skilled in techniques like scraping, massage, and bone setting. He’s willing to teach, but actually, he just teaches his apprentices so they can be lazy. Dino is also willing to learn, so he knows all these techniques.
After taking the medicine and getting a massage for more than ten minutes, Dino chatted with Grandma Park. Deputy Park was indeed a filial son. Even though it was time for him to go to work, he didn’t go.
Instead, he stayed by her side and suddenly shouted, “Mom, your mouth is better now. You’re not smoking anymore.”
“Really?” Old Madam Lin was chatting casually, not having thought of this at first. She took out a mirror and looked at herself as she spoke.
She did stop smoking, her eyes slightly moist with emotion. Grasping Dino’s hand, she thanked him profusely: “Dino, thank you. You saved me from being called an old crooked mouth and getting a bad name. Thank you.”
Deputy Park thanked him repeatedly. He had only been a little enthusiastic before, but now he was extremely enthusiastic. He asked about the cost of the medicine, and Dino, after thinking it over, simply said that he would charge him all at once after several more treatments.
The efficacy of the old dog’s prescription is essentially a toss-up—it will either work or it won’t, regardless of the dosage. However, Dino had spoken with Old Four last night and was aware he needed to perform a service. Simply agreeing to the request would have made the favor seem too trivial, which is why he claimed he would need to ask for it several more times.
Deputy Park, of course, had no idea that he was taking Dino to work on the way, and he had been dropping him off outside the town.
