Chapter 10: Nicole

“Good morning, Rebecca,” I say with a hint of surprise at seeing her in reception at this time. “Aren’t you doing the unlock in E4 this morning?”
“Morning, Nicole. I managed to find one of the visiting mistresses to do the morning unlock of the slaves for the next few days.”
“That’s unusual. Most of the mistresses won’t surface from their beauty sleep for another hour. Who did you persuade?”
“Melody, believe it or not. And she volunteered without any pressure from me.”
When I first met Melody shortly after I arrived on the island last year, Melody was the least likely mistress you could imagine. Clearly she and her submissive friend, Drippy, have come to understand their desires and worked through their living arrangements.
“So what’s happening today,” asks Rebecca. “Has Melissa reported for work? I wouldn’t put it past Bernice to cause mischief.”
“Melissa is finishing her breakfast and then she’ll be working in the gardens today. I’ve assigned Tessa and a couple of new Field Slaves to help her.”
“I think we might need to reassign Tessa before long. Several mistresses are eager to have a Buttercup in their thrall, and Tessa is the only one on the island.”
While all members of the Slave caste who have achieved success in a Flower Assessment are in demand, very few slaves are Buttercup types. I agree that assigning Tessa to hard labour in the garden is a waste of her skills and preferences, but she has registered as a Field Slave in order to cover the cost of her stay. Unless a mistress is prepared to cover Tessa’s lost earnings, I have no right to deny Tessa the opportunity to work for her keep.
My second surprise of the morning is when April walks into the building before nine o’clock. She waves a brief greeting in the direction of Rebecca and me before going into her office. I remember Melissa’s request to speak with April in private, so I follow April into her office.
“Melissa has requested a word with you in private,” I say to April. “She’s still upstairs if you want to see her now.”
“Oh! What now? Are all slaves so demanding? Yes, tell her I’ll see her now.”
I’m still puzzled by the dynamics between April and Melissa. They don’t interact as mistress and slave, although that may be because April is a mistress in name only. Melissa seems comfortable as a member of the Slave caste, although I’m fairly sure she didn’t get the choice of caste.
I locate Melissa getting ready to start work. She follows me to April’s office and I leave them in peace. Tessa and the two other slaves assigned to work in the garden have assembled in the Slave Holding Area, and I tell them that there will be a slight delay.
Melissa collects her helpers ten minutes later and they set off for the gardeners’ sheds. I’m busy preparing for today’s arrivals when April calls me into her office.
“Explain the purpose of rule 28D,” says April to me, sliding a printed copy of the La Chatte Heureuse rule book across her desk.
While I don’t memorise every club rule verbatim, I understand the purpose of each rule and the gist of what it says. I verify that I’ve correctly remembered what rule 28D says.
“The rule limits the amount of punishment a slave can receive in a 24 hour period,” I say. “It prevents excessive punishments, and avoids multiple mistresses punishing the same slave in sequence.”
“But it doesn’t apply to Chattel Slaves; correct?” adds April.
“That’s right. Rule 28D1 amends the rule for Chattel Slaves because only the recognised mistress of a Chattel Slave can punish her. That’s why we insist on Chattel Slaves and their mistresses be in an established relationship. Why do you ask?”
“I have reason to believe that Bernice and others intend to propose extending rule 28D1 to enable all mistresses to set unlimited punishments of any slave.”
“That would be disastrous,” I reply. “We would lose many members of the Slave caste under those conditions. We must do what we can to thwart the proposal. I presume this information comes from Melissa.”
“It does, but you mustn’t reveal the source. Melissa is due to return to Bernice tonight, and I don’t want her situation jeopardised.”
I nod in agreement. My already high opinion of Melissa goes up a further notch. Most slaves would have said nothing in that situation, fearing for their own well being.
“And Nicole. I want your opinion on how many additional staff we would need to hire if we are to reopen the rest of the buildings by mid-August.”
“Not all of the buildings have been refurbished. If you mean to only reopen those which were open before the closure, then we’ll need an extra three staff on top of those we’ve already discussed. If you delay reopening the Tower, then we can probably manage with only two extra staff. At least one of the new staff will need to be in the Mistress caste, particularly if you intend to reopen the Tower. It will mean using the building you’re currently using for visiting mistresses as well.”
“Okay. I’ll get back to you later in the week if I intend for us to proceed with that plan. Now, I’m going to be away for a few days. I’ve set up interviews in town for the staff positions we discussed before. I’m leaving on the outbound boat this morning.”
“Yes, okay. Who will be in charge while you are gone?”
“You and Rebecca can make any routine decisions. If anything out of the ordinary crops up then consult with Melissa and follow her advice.”
Melissa? I look at April in shock. This is yet another twist in the bizarre relationship between April and Melissa. April demands that Melissa does lots of heavy manual work as an unpaid slave, but then regards her as a valuable consultant when it comes to important management decisions. None of this makes sense.
“Don’t over-think the situation, Nicole. Do your job and allow me to do mine. I know what I’m doing. Despite Melissa’s and my mutual dislike for each other, I have confidence in her ability to do the right thing for La Chatte Heureuse. Oh! And don’t forget that Melissa agreed to spend one night in a cell once Bernice has finished with her.”
