The pattern continued. Days filled with proper lessons—calligraphy, poetry, court etiquette—where they maintained careful distance and spoke formally. Nights in the hidden pavilion where they could finally drop the masks and be themselves.

Nara lived for those nights.

Three weeks after their first kiss, they lay together on the cushions in the pavilion, Wei’s head on Nara’s shoulder, their fingers intertwined.

“Tell me something no one else knows about you,” Wei said softly.

“Like what?”

“Anything. A secret. A dream. Something you’ve never told anyone.”

Nara thought for a moment. “When I was thirteen, I tried to run away from home.”

Wei lifted her head to look at her. “Why?”

“My father was arranging a marriage for me. To a khan’s son I’d never met. I didn’t want to be traded like a horse, so I packed supplies and rode out in the middle of the night.”

“What happened?”

“I made it three days before my father’s warriors found me. I fought them—actually knocked two of them off their horses before they managed to capture me.” Nara smiled at the memory. “My father was furious. But also ... proud, I think. He canceled the marriage arrangement. Said any daughter of his who could evade his best trackers for three days deserved to choose her own path.”

“He sounds like he respected you.”

“He did. He does.” Nara’s throat tightened. “I wonder if he still does, now that I’ve been captured. If he thinks I’m weak.”

“You’re not weak. You fought five warriors alone. You’ve survived in enemy territory. You’ve adapted without losing who you are.” Wei touched Nara’s face. “You’re the strongest person I’ve ever known.”

Nara caught Wei’s hand and kissed her palm. “Your turn. Tell me something no one knows.”

Wei was quiet for a long moment. “I’m terrified of storms.”

“Why?”

“When I was six, there was a terrible storm. Lightning struck the palace, started a fire. My nurse got me out, but my sister—my youngest sister—didn’t make it.” Wei’s voice was barely a whisper. “I can still hear her screaming. Every time it storms, I hear it.”

Nara pulled her closer. “I’m sorry.”

“I’ve never told anyone that before. Not even my other sisters. They think I’m just childish, afraid of thunder.” Wei pressed her face against Nara’s chest. “But with you, I can say the truth. I don’t have to pretend to be strong all the time.”

“You are strong. But you don’t have to be strong alone anymore.”
